I wind my watches that are in my current rotation, about once a week, sometimes even sooner than that.
The watches I hardly/rarely ever wear get winded maybe once every 1-2 months.
My favorite watch to wind? the Panerai

ok i have a question for those of you that have multiple watches. i know that some of you use winders and some do not. For those who do not use mechanical winders do you manually wind your watches daily? or do you just reset them when you wear them? how bad is it to let a mechanical watch sit idle? |

I wind all of mine manually each day. You do need to wind a watch periodically to prevent the lubricating oils from breaking down. Usually a once a month wind is sufficient and don't forget to run the chrono as well. |

Mine run down when I'm not wearing them. I wear one for 2 or 3 days then pick another one, which means I have to wind it up and set it (I usually do this while I'm walking to work in the morning). Thinking I might try a winder again (didn't get on with the cheap one I tried last time) but only for the convenience factor. I don't think it's doing any harm to have a watch sit idle for a couple of weeks between wearings. And I have 2 manual wind watches so will have to keep winding them when I want to wear them anyway. |

I wind my manual winds daily and my automatics at least twice a week for the sake of the oils, unless I forget of course As I don't have the numbers that some others have, it isn't time consuming at all.

I have a watch winder and put them on there then after a month or so I turn that motors off of the ones I want to sit still for about 1-2 weeks, they wind down after their power reserves are gone and sit for a week-2weeks then i reset them to the correct date and time and turn the motors back on the winder so they stay running for another months or 2 |

No negative effects at all. For the ones with a screw-down crown, I sometimes wonder whether it is increasing wear on the crown threads compared to a watch that is constantly worn and therefore doesn't need hand winding (they can't last forever, surely) but I haven't had any problems so far. |
