Post subject:  question about Navitimer World!

I just picked up Navitimer World!!! My first Breitling!! few questions again..
Store owner told me I should let chronograph run 24/7 since automatic watch needs to be constantly moving... is this true??
if it is then when I'm not wearing the watch do I just let it run?
and how should I store it when I'm not wearing it? Is it ok not to wear the watch for few days? sorry about the newbie questions.. this is my very first automatci watch so forgive me if im asking stupid questions!
Thanks for the help again!!

Congratulations on the Navi World!

No questions are stupid, but some answers can be ignorant... You should never be afraid of asking - how do we all gain knowledge otherwise? Your store owner is partly right, partly wrong (or maybe he just confused you a bit). An automatic watch will automatically wind its spring when you wear the watch. However, in order to get it right from the beginning you will very likely need to wind it manually as well (wind it 40 turns, approximately). You shouldn't worry about overwinding it since it has protection against that. When your watch is fully wound, it have a power reserve of 42 hours. That means, if you take it off and leave it it will keep running for 42 hours. But, using the chronograph also consumes energy, so if you leave it running all the time it will have a power reserve of less than 42 hours. All mechanical constructions are best off in use, but I doubt that leaving the chronograph on or off will make a major difference. When you're not wearing the watch, you have three options. First, you van buy an automatic watch winder that will keep the watch rotating and running when you don't wear it yourself. Second, you can wind it manually once a day and it'll also keep running. Third, next time you wear it (if it has run out of power) set the time and then wind it. Neither of these options will damage the watch.

Aleister is on the money.....

Be sure not to take your Navi-World in the drink! They aren't very water resistant...Other than that, enjoy it!

I've often wondered about leaving the chrono running 24/7. Does anyone do this?

Thanks,
Dave

dave, i've heard arguments for both. i've heard some people say that leaving the chronograph running 24/7 won't do anything more than eat into the power reserve and potentially contribute to your watch running slightly slower. however, i've also heard that leaving the chronograph running all the time is bad for the movement as it causes excess stress/friction on the gears/parts that control the chronograph. however, i'm sure the admin or vanessa if she is hanging around will have a much better knowledge of this.

I would not leave the chronograph features running 24/7.

You'll just rob your power reserve.

Yeah... some people like having the chrono running 24/7 because it makes the watch look like its running because of how the small seconds its not as obvious. It does cause excess wear, and uses up some of that power reserve... but its fine if that's how you like your watch to run :)

Any input from Watchmakeress on this one? Not that I am interested in letting the SA run 24/7 but I would like to know if it could be detrimental. How bout Alien?
