I was talking to a friend of mine the other day. When I brought up buying a quartz watch from Breitling he said he would never buy one. What's the prejudice against quartz watches?

Lot's of people (incl. me) think that mechanical watches have soul, unlike super accurate made from few parts, battery moving 'boring' quartz.
But I don't think it's a prejudice, just dislike...
IMO every watch collector should have one quartz watch thou...

I personally prefer mechanical watches, there is something about knowing that I play a role in the operation of the watch unlike quartz that require some type of energy source. However as one would expect its all about personal choice.

I wouldnt buy a quartz watch myself, I prefer the warmth and personality of a mechanical watch. But that said, there are some really gorgeous SuperQuartz Breitlings. The look and style of the M1 for example is to die for, yet only available as SuperQuartz movement. It is really down to your preference as to style and use, and a Breitling is a Breitling wether its Quartz or not surely.

There is no quartz watch like a Breitling Quartz II. It is COSC certified, which most are not, and it is dead accurate. You can read about it in the "Technical Details" under the Colt Quartz section of Aeromarine models. It is "thermocompensated" I believe is the term, to be accurate in variations of temperature. The Colt Quartz is one of the sturdiest watches around, supposedly the battery is good for 8 years.
I just got a Steelfish, because I really do like the "personality" of the automatics. My second choice, however, was the Colt Quartz. The Steelfish also a little bigger (44mm opposed to 40), and the bracelet is 22mm instead of 20mm. I did however try a Quartz on and it looked great as well. Quartz movements also used in most of the Professional line.
I would be more than proud to own a Breitling Quartz! I don't really have a collection, but at some point I will likely own a Breitling Quartz II.

I like to keep one (usually reasonably cheap) quartz in my collection as a knockaround watch that I can wear if I'm having a few pints of "giggle juice" and may knock it into something! (I think a lot of you guys tend to call them "beaters" instead of knockaround watches, but the idea is the same). My secondhand Omega Seamaster Quartz currently fills this role admirably for me.

For my other watches I feel you can't beat a mechanical watch for all the reasons stated above by others in this thread. I had a Breitling M1 and a B1 (both for very short periods of time) and neither really did it for me. Nothing at all wrong with either, but soul of an auto is hard to beat.

I have a quartz Ebel Sportwave which is my knockabout watch. I bought it new (but with a 50% discount) from a major uk retail chain (Goldsmiths for our UK readers).

They have a shop in cheshire, which is an outlet for watches and jewellery that they have surplus stock of from their main retail shops.

Last time I was there, they had a few Omega watches they were selling for a 33% discount, literally dozens of Tag Heuers, some Oris, Rado, Bell & Ross and others.
