Post subject:  Temporary Watch Winder?

I've fallen in love with my SuperOcean Steelfish X-Plus. I now see why people in movies are forever wearing their watches for everything, exercising, fooling around, and in their bathrobes, they're keeping them wound  It's a chunk of watch but it does not feel clunky or large, it feels rather good as a matter of fact.

Anyway, today I'm going to a place that I would prefer something a bit thinner so it's
my Aerospace. The SuperOcean has a 40 hour reserve, I know that, but I want to keep it wound.

I've ordered a watch winder but it's not here yet, probably a week to go on that, so I was looking around.

My son has a drum rock tumbler. It's a slow moving, rotating, drum (oddly enough) and I was wondering about it. I can get the watch around a pillow that will keep it secure inside the drum and not allow it to move. If I do that with the face towards the front of the drum, on the rotation point, would that work for the days that I cannot or would rather wear something else? Is that the way the winding works?

A rock tumbler? I always though those were made to polish rocks. If so, I guess you could put your Steelfish in it, but secure it very carefully. You wouldn't like to polish it down...

Personally, I would rather manually wind it when I get the chance. If it runs out of power reserve, just set the time again.

They are basically a plastic drum that rotates slowly. There's no polishing compound in them nor anything else, just a drum that rotates.

The securely part I figured. Absolute worst case, it'll bounce around inside the drum if it comes loose, but I've got a number of sheets of egg crate foam that I can roll up to wrist size. I figured I'd roll one so it's more than a bit larger diameter than my wrist and let the bracelet compress it, then put that into the drum so it's secure with the foam all around the inside as well.

I wouldn't dare rig something to wind a piece I've spent good money on. Wait until you've saved for a winder or manually wind your timepiece.

Although I would give you kudos for that unique idea, I would also not recommend it for your watch. The continuous rotation isn't exactly the best thing for an automatice watch. The whole idea behind a winder is to wind the mainspring and then allow a rest period for the mainspring to release tension.

-eh- Decided to leave it alone during the day and then wear it around the house in the evenings on the days I don't wear it during the day.

I've already ordered a winder, just waiting for it to arrive :)

How about a washing machine on gentle cycle. I mean, the watch IS waterproof...

I kid because I care, Daniel. ;)
