Whatever you do, DON'T try a pannerai! Trust me, your pocketbook won't be the same if you do.

I have looked at them several times and just don't like them. I really do not like the crown guards, they look pretty cheesy IMHO sort of like Graham watches or Reidenschild but aside from that the watches just look gimicky. Pannys are NOT for me, I just don't "get it".

Thought it was just me!

I'm not keen on them either. Love their movements, don't like the look of the watches themselves.

I have my eye on a Bremont at the moment. Whether I'll actually get it or not is anyone's guess though, as I'm not quite convinced yet :D

As the resident paneristi here, I fully accept that Panerai are 'different', but I'm sorry to have to disagree on one point - they are certainly not 'gimicky' IMHO

Out of interest (and I'm not trying to prove a point here) do you know why they have the crown guard?

Oh and welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure if that question was for jhowton only or not, but as the indescreet guy I am... It's for ensuring water proof/resistance, isn't it?

Thanks for the welcome, I always assumed they had the crown guard because the watches were so huge that you can't get through doorways without smashing them on something.....

Just kidding, no, I have no idea.

I'm not trying to show off, it's just that the crown guard is a bit Panerai isn't it...the reason it's there is really very simple;

The original Panerai were designed for the Italian Navy, in particular their frogmen, and this design was what Panerai came up with to ensure that the winding crown didn't move outwards thus flooding the watch.

With regard to the Rolex type screw-in crown, I can only imagine that the crown-guard idea was easier to manufacture?

So I was right in my response... :)

I've heard another reason, and that is not due to ease of manufacturing. At that time, the screw-in crown was protected by patents by Rolex. Of course this might be a fairy tale, but it makes sense to me.

I've heard a similar thing - seems reasonable. Ironic that the first Panerais used Rolex movements...
