Post subject:  Navitimer World Anti-reflective coating?? Confused?

Hi all, hope everyone is having a great weekend so far.

I received the Navitimer World with white dial last night, and it looks stunning. The white dial looks huge compared to the black dial I had before. This watch feels like a white dial motors on the wrist. My house guests and my wife were instantly very impressed with the watch, it is an attention grabber.

My question revolves around the outer AR. The black dial had outer AR, while this white dial from 2005 doesn't. I've looked very closely to see if there is any evidence that it has been removed and I can't see any.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Were earlier models done without outer AR? Could it be that the white dials were done without it to avoid a colour cast on the dial? Very curious about this one.

Mark

I've never heard of the older World not havoing double AR, and looking at the Chronolog from 2005 (and from the years before and after) all Breitlings seem to have double AR coating. Perhaps this one of yours, Mark, got a scratch and the previous owner just thought they'd remove the outer coating.

As far as I am aware every colour of every model has had double AR from the factory for quite some time. I think Driver8's supposition is probably correct - removed due to a scratch / taste preference.

Mark,

Try to get more info from the previous owner. It would bother me.

BTW, congrats on the new watch, any pictures to share with us?

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. You are indeed correct, the AR was removed. I did manage to find a tiny area of remaining AR to show that it was removed.

This irks me a little as I wasn't made aware of this prior to the trade, but I contacted the gentleman I traded with and he was unaware of it being removed. He bought it second hand, and having never owned a World before, he didn't know it was missing the AR. I believe him 100%, as he is a stand up guy.

Quite honestly the watch doesn't suffer at all from missing the AR, but still, it bugs me and I'm not sure how to proceed. Thoughts?

There is no way a camera will pick up anything, looks just like a white dial World on bracelet, without the outer AR.

If you are curious whether it is authentic or not, I can guarantee it is authentic. No doubt about it.

Too bad if camera won't pick up anything.
Didn't question authenticity at all, don't think that someone can peddle a fake to you.

LOL! I hope you are right about the fakes... but you never know :) It took me 3 inspections with a loupe before I found some remaining AR where it wasn't quite fully removed. So picking this up on camera would be next to impossible.

I think the only solution will be a new crystal - I'm sure there are people out there who would offer to recoat, but Breitling will just put a new crystal in - not sure on cost of that.

I think I remember I heard around $400 +/- for a new crystal....

You can get it re-coated for probably $100 from aftermarket guys. The nice thing is, white dials don't reflect as much as black.

Breitling might re-coat the watch on service. Every time I've sent in mine for anything, a FS was done. I can't imagine that fixing/replacing the crystal would increase the amount of the service in any event. I wouldn't sweat it; just make sure it's addressed when the inevitable occurs, and you send it to BUSA in a couple years.

As far as I know Breitling will not recoat a crystal.

And I guarantee that a replacement crystal will be an additional cost on a full service.

Yeah, there is no way Breitling will just replace or recoat the crystal for free. A service is typical a full teardown of the movement, regulation and cleaning. Any additional parts that need to be replaced, are going to be extra.

When I take my car in for an oil change, they don't throw in a free windshield if it has some cracks ;)

I've had a full service done twice, and the cost was the same on both counts - just under $600. In one instance, the crystal was replaced (although I'm not entirely sure why). Last January, a FS was completed with no crystal replacement, and the cost was higher.

YMMV
