My Chronomat without bracelet / strap or spring bars fitted
Weighs 81.1g

Breitling states that it should weigh 79.9g
It's a 2002 model (very early 2002)

I have taken the bezel off, cleaned it and the click spring.

Still weighs 81.1g

What's up with this?

My scales are bang on, as my other Breitlings weigh correctly.

I'm getting it pressure tested tomorrow, so will have the caseback off.

Bought it from original owner who says it's never been in for service or had the caseback off.

On very close inspection there aren't any tool marks on the facets, so I have no reason to doubt him.

Could the weight difference be Breitling using up the slightly earlier Chronomat cases (as I believe they were the same shape) ?

Or is there a dead rat stuffed in there ?

My money's on the dead rat........, or 1.2g of wrist cheese! Image

Not a clue why there would be a difference in weight if your scales are bang on for your other watches. As you say maybe Breitling changed the cases very slightly over the years.

Surely not a full 1g of wrist cheese.

I want to see the caseback off and see the movement. There'd better be a Breitling 13 in there or I'm gonna throw a hissy fit !

Anyone got a good pic of the mov't ?

It looks like a standard 7750 with a Breitling rotor slapped on.

I guess that we really must be running out of topics if we are down to 1.2 grams of weight

There will doubtless be tweaks made at different times that don't cause Breitling to change the specs - maybe they changed the rotor design, that could easily account for the difference, case tolerances don't need to be exact as movement tolerances so that will vary, they may have started using a thicker sapphire, etc, etc.

Reminds my of a particularly perdantic account handler at an ad agency i used to work at. I was teasing her about this in an office full of people and she was not getting that i was winding her up.

Got so cross that she ended up saying in a very loud voice to make the point.

'I DON'T DO ANAL'

I've spent my entire adult life in ad agencies, and I find that highly redundant!

Oh, and her response was an absolute classic.

In addition to the other (more likely) reasons suggested by others, it is also possible Breitling simply got it wrong on this one. It's not quite the same thing, but I noticed a disparity in Breitling's thickness measurements for the Chronomat Evolution and the (older gen) CSO. The Evo's thickness was listed by Breitling as approximately 17mm, which is what I came up with using a vernier caliper, measuring from the caseback to the top of the crystal. My measurement for the CSO was exactly the same (17mm), but Breitling listed its thickness as 15mm.

It has been suggested by others that Breitling doesn't take the caseback into account with its thickness measurements, so there will always be a discrepancy between the listed measurement and one that factors in the caseback. But the fact is, the Breitling's listed Evo measurement matched the measurement I took that did factor in the caseback. I'm not sure which one was the outlier, but Breitling evidently used two different methods for calculating the thickness of those two watches. Either that, or they just screwed up when publishing the figures - take your pick. My point is, if you're confident your scale is correct, and the difference isn't explained another way (which it could well be), then it's not unfathomable to think Breitling messed up.
