OK, so I've been doing some research on line and narrowed down the watch I want. Superocean. Will be my first Breitling. Also, given the overwhelming number of fakes and non papered seconds on EBay, I've decided that buying new from an AD is the smart way to go. But, I have a couple of questions after visiting the AD today.

I've heard a lot on the forums about 20-30% discounts off retail list price being the norm at AD's. Do you guys who've been buying from them see this as pretty standard? The AD here said he's never heard of such a thing, and that they've never sold a Breitling for less than the rare 15% off sale. Also said that the margin was so slim on them that a dealer couldn't mark a watch down like that.

Where can I get a current retail price list? The watch I looked at - Superocean with steel band - was marked at $2,875.00. I thought I saw these listed at roughly $2200 but I'm not sure about that.

Thanks for any help.

Your local AD is just trying to squeeze as much money out you as possible. You can find the discounts you mentioned and should have good luck with the AD that a lot of people have bought from. You should have a PM with that information.

Agree with the above. Your AD is not giving you the full story. According to my AD (who provided me a 30% discount plus $300 off) the "typical" AD (apparently varies by AD but no info on what are the factors - perhaps volume of sales or a combination of factors?) pays retail minus 40% for most models (no, she didn't define "typical" or "most" even when I asked). SHe said it's then up to the AD what to discount. Her store discounts many models by 30%, but the Bentley line for example, only by 15%. She said people who shop there, and who can afford to buy that line, don't need the extra 15% (i.e. the full 30% below retail) discount to move them into the "buyer" column. She also indicated BUSA doesn't allow discounting on certain models below BUSA specified levels (so if the store want to discount by 30% for example, BUSA might only allow a 15% discount on the model in question). She says this varies over time and season of year. She said BUSA takes an active role (not sure compared to who) in making sure that ADs that are close geographically don't get into biddign wars. There are only 2 AD's in Baltimore (one has 1 store, the other has 2 stores) and they are located about 300 meters from one another.

15% off the retail price does sound a little low to me. 20% off is generally my starting point however I'd be stunned if I was to achieve a 30% discount. Having said that this does depend a lot on both an individual AD and the country you're purchasing your Breilting from.

It's also worth mentioning that often if you buy at the end of the month you'll often get a bigger discount than at the start or the middle of the month as AD's rely on number of watches sold (my experience anyway). Again that depends though :D

My advice would be to go with the above, at least as a starting point. Good luck!
