I personally wouldn't use a sharp cutting blade - a simple pocket knife is better (the blade is stronger and won't "snap" off)

You'll be surprised at how much play there is, even with a thick leather/croco strap

:yeahthat I have a spring bar removal tool which will remove bracelets as well, but on straps I find that a penknife or a kitchen knife works just as well if not better.

I agree with Sportback that you don't want to use anything too thin as you have to put a bit of pressure on the blade sideways, so you don't want to risk it snapping.
