Fear's recent purchase made me make this. Im sure he's having a great time wearing it.
Blacksteel being his 'grail' watch forced me to think about my choice. In the meanwhile....

Why dont you guys share the one :lingsrock: which makes you feel the same way ??

[Im new here, i apologise if this discussion has been held before, having said that choices change every year with baselworld dont they :) ]

Since the day my Super Avenger arrived a few years ago it has been my "Grail" breitling. It is very bold, get's noticed, with the polished bracelet passes the "Bling" test and has always been my favorite.

To me a grail watch has to have certain qualities to it, otherwise it's just a nice watch.
1. It has to be basically unobtainable.
2. It has to be highly desirable.
3. In needs to be stunning visually.
4. It can't be new.
5. There needs to be a long hunt followed by a "find"
6. It needs to be something you would buy regardless of price.. To a certain degree.

Take for example this 1988 Chronomat Luna.
The luna is a prime example because it was never listed in any Breitling catalog and made for a very short time.

It started out as an e-bay auction in the UK. The watch was listed in OK condition but was obviously in need of some cosmetic TLC. This is the picture in the e-bay listing.

After getting it via a long wait through customs and cleaning it up, replacing the broken tab..

Then the hunt was on to finish the watch with the proper UTC and Bracelet.

I'm not sure that I have a single grail.

As txturbo says it would need to be a very hard watch to obtain, and would have to be something very special. Two watches spring to mind, both of which Driver8 also loves are the Mulliner Perpetual and the Chrono Avenger Rattrapante (LE of 25).

I would love to own either of thise, but if I did I'm not sure that I would then say that my collection was complete - and to me that's what a grail needs to be.

In terms of vintage watches I can comfortbaly day that I would never top a 1942 Chronomat and 1952 Navitimer, but I would still want to supplement the collection if I ever attained those.

If I had to bring it down to a single watch then it would be one of the annual LE of 1 Bentley pocket watches that are produced for Basel every year. Completely unattainable - 7 figure watch if one ever came to the market, but that would be a watch that I could never top.

Well Roff beat me to it! My grail Breitlings are indeed the Mulliner Perpetual in red gold and the LE Chrono Avenger Rattrapante. Both are "hens teeth" rare and certainly in the case of the Mulliner, hideously expensive. (Not sure what the Chrono Avenger Ratty would go for as I've never seen one for sale!)

I have a couple of other grails, but they aren't Breitlings I'm afraid!

Not sure if it completely fits as a grail Breitling, but for a very long time I wanted and searched for a bronze dial Breitling for Bentley Le Mans. The Le Mans was made in 1000 pieces, from which 250 were bronze. After some extended searches I finally found one at a reasonable price.

Now, well, I have to admit - after getting that one you could say I lost a bit of the Breitling urge. Might sounds strange, but when having it in my hand (on my wrist) the lust for expanding the collection further has diminished. Especially when being disappointed from the latest Basel's. I like the new color combos they recently reveiled, but apart from that I feel I won't be buying any new Breitlings for a long while. Other brands may benefit from that, of course.

My breitling grail would be the Mulliner Tourbillon and the Mark VI complications 19. Both very beautiful but the 19 is more attainable but still very hard to reach for now. :)

Unfortunately my grail tastes follow those of our distinguised moderators. The Bentley Mulliner perpetual. I am cool without the Rose gold, however. MUCH more attainable (not really)

The mark VI 19 looks beautiful....the layout of the dial and the color choice make me drool !
Mulliner Perpetual Vs QP LE is on my mind atm.

There are some stunning watches mentioned throughout this thread. I've been thinking about it over the past couple of days actually, more about how I would personally define a Grail watch. No grail would ever stop me from purchasing more watches however attainable grails vs unattainable grails is where I get stuck

As far as Breitling Grails, I really can't go past the Mulliner Perpetual, just stunning!

For me a grail has to be attainable and must cover more than one base. By that I mean I like dress watches, but could never consider one a "grail" because thats all its good for. I need some water resistance, enough to swim in but not a diver. An in house movement is a bonus too, if its a grail I don't want to find the movement in half a dozen other brands.

For me, it has to be the new B01 in gold with the roman numerals and a black face. It can be sporty/classy with the bracelet, a dress watch with a nice croc, I can sit in a hot tub with it on and the in house movement tops it off nicely. The bezel has grown on me if i'm honest, and the OEM diamond bezel wouldn't go a miss if I had the coin, but that would make it unreachable.
