Post subject:  Spotted A Fake!!!!

Hey all,

Was out this past weekend for a birthday.

I was introduced to someone who was wearing a Breitling. I told the guy he had a nice watch on.

He said thanks, " Its a Breitling."

I was trying to figure out which of the Bentley Motors It Was,or if it Was A Super Avenger.

I should have known off the bat.

WELL, our friend here tells me about it. So i say uh its caliber 13 ? Its uh valjoux 7750 eta right?

Yes, urr.yeah its caliber 13 and valjoux. Im like uh around 25,000 or 28,000 vibrations an hour or so right??

Uh, er uh yeah yes.

I said do you know which one it is? I had a bit of poor judgement after some cocktails.

He explained to me it was the Bentley. I said it must be the 6.75 right? Larger than 44mm right buddy?

Yeah around that.

ENjoy the watch i said.

Well, our pal confessed to me. He said, " Well I feel like an idiot knowing you knew I lied to you."

I was so humbled, and told him it was ok, haha....and said " When the buying stops the fakes stop!"

He asked how I knew. He paid $500 for a fake, pft. I looked at the back of the bracelet, the wings logo was not embossed, it was printed on, how terrible. I would imagine on all even the Bentley they are embossed.

I asked him if he was running a chrono function..because the Chrono hand was operating. I did not notice any change in subdials however, but maybe should have checked again.

The rider tab moved to easily.

He also asked me how else I knew. I wasnt sure but the bottom had 3 different bentleys on the case back.

THe caseback did not flow evenly and had a black ring around it. I asked him if the pushers were screw down, he had no idea.

Also, I asked if it came with a COSC. He said what the "hell is that"?

The head and watch in general were way too light..

And i did not feel the mechanisms inside whirring when i shook it.

He explained how many people complimented him, but apologised for lying to a conossieur haha.

This was a post to prove how much everyone's knowledge is so valuable on this site!

Lets keep it up!

Cute story, but I bet 90%+ Breitling owners couldn't tell you what COSC, Caliber 13, 7750, or vph were.

True. I love watches and I love my Breitling, but there are definitely details about it's inner workings that I wouldn't think to ask.

I personally couldn't care less if someone was wearing a fake. I don't know what motivates people to buy fakes of anything. But I'm a guy who likes "quality" and some people just want a name - so maybe that's it.

Actually, the only guy I'd ever call out is if he were doing something douchey and acting cool and self-important - then I'd ask him why he's wearing a fake just to shut him up and embarrass him. But if it were some guy just wearing a fake and not being a douche, I'd probably just keep my mouth shut and be satisfied knowing that I know :)

That's priceless...lol. That happened to me once in a restaurant with a few friends of mine. There was a guy at the next table wearing a motors and one of my friends piped up and said nice watch and the guy wearing the watch gave him a smug look as if to say "i'm too good for you to say thank you for the compliment". So my friend asked me, do all breitling owners act like that and i said no. Most will be more than happy to talk about their watches.

My friend then proceeded to ask if it was a real one and the reply was, of course it's real with another smug look. I took a quick glance at the watch and told my friend it was a complete fake. Then the game started. My friend was all over him with very bad remarks and how the gent was behaving towards a person who was trying to compliment his taste in fine watches. By the end of the conversation the guy with the fake got up and left his dinner behind. Very amusing.

I forwaded the picture of Arnold Swartzenegger wearing the SOH (my watch) to a co-worker who I knew had a Breitling........he stopped by to admit that his is a fake.
He said he got it in China Town (NY).........gotta love the Chinese with all their fakes and rip-off's...

I was at a conference last week. Spoke with a famous surgeon there. Pointed out his fake Chronomat. He did not believe. Took him to Sharkmouth' website. To watch the veil of self-importance wash away was refreshing. He is generally a complete a$$, but to watch the look of understanding as he had been revealed (he knew it was fake, but like usual thought he was the smartest guy inthe room and could get away with it) made the whole trip more pleasant. Thanks Sharky! Good time! :lingsrock:

Interesting story, but to be totally honest with you that was a total douche bag move. Yes the watch was fake and the guy was fronting, but trying to belittle the guy by providing your unsolicited Breitling knowledge is just corny.

Learn from this and move on...

If someone chooses to wear counterfeit watches, then they're opening themselves up to the potential consequences. I believe "belittlement" would be one of the more benign consequences.
Counterfeit merchandise has a criminal element to it. Not sure about other countries, but the U.S. Customs spends much of their resources intercepting counterfeit products, before they can enter the market.
I saw a program where they drove a tank over a whole truck load of counterfeit watches, to destroy them. Was awesome........especially to know that someone lost money on that seizure.

To be honest I would not have a clue of the answers  I have many watches and the most expensive retails at £13000 GBP, If you started asking me the in's and out about it I would laugh at you  Does this make me any less a WIS than you?
