I am posting this on this site and the Rolex Forum site, as I am in need of help to make my final decision. I am up in the air over three different watches. All are coming for an AD and are brand new, I like all equally for different reasons. HELP...

Rolex GMT Master IIc, steel, black dial and bezel retail $7000, discounted price of $5600 out the door.

or

Breitling Chronomat, Graphite face with graphite subs, on steel, Retail $5840, discounted price of $4100 out the door.

or

Breitling Chrono Super Ocean Black face with silver subs, on steel, Retail 4160, discounted price of $3000 out the door.

Also how is my pricing compared to what you guys are getting on your Lings?

Ideas, thoughts or any thing to help me decide.

The GMT is a good price, here in the UK BNIB cheapest one I could find (and believe me I looked) was £3600 GBP

Why are you purchasing this watch? Are you getting it for looks? Is there a practical application you want a watch to have? Are you planning on keeping it long-term or will it be a secondary watch?

IMO, the only real difference between the Breitlings are their looks - the features are pretty much the same.

The Rolex just has a GMT, but that ceramic bezel is really nice.

If it's strictly for looks, I'd say which one puts the biggest smile on your face and which one do you think you'll still love 5 years from now. I'd also say that going with black and steel are "timeless" colors and materials. The graphite looks cool, but not sure how stylish or cool is may look 5 years from now. I'm not a fan having different colors on the subs either.

So if it were me, given those three choices, and as much as I love my Ling, I'd probably take the Rolex if it's just for looks. If you're looking for some additional features, then I'd say the Chronomat.

Hmmm...all nice, but if it were my money, id buy the chronomat, the CSO, and the Rollie, in that order. All fine watches, but I cant see the value in the Rolex.

Thanks guys, I agree with one of the previous posts about the graphite dial. Does the Chronomat come with a black dial and black subs, that is what I really want but have not seen it with the markers.

Personally I'd go the CSO, then chronomat and then the rolex (although I could happily exchange the CSO for the Chronomat ).

Then again it's not about me...which one do you like the most and can envisage yourself happily wearing?

Firstly I'd say go with which ever one you like the most and which you think suits you best. At the end of the day, you have to wear it and it's your money, so your opinion is all that counts.

If that little internal debate comes out all equal, then start thinking about feature, etc.

Personally if it was my cash (and this is just my personal opinion), I'd go with the Rolex first because the in-house movement is an important factor for me these days. My only issue with the GMT II is that it's too small for me. In that respect I'd go with the Chronomat, but the lack on a in-house movement is it's only downside IMO. The CSO is still a very nice watch, but that'd be bottom of my list out of those three.

If the movement is less important to you, then the decision may be much easier : I guess it comes down to what features you want.

Either way they are all nice watches and you have a nice choice to make!

Just goes to show how varied opinion can be - for me, the sub-dials have to contrast (so from a few metres away it is apparent the watch has complexity), and I reckon Romans suck on a chronograph. But I do like Romans on dress watches.

As for Driver8's comment regarding the Rolex movement being in-house...yeah OK, but to use an expression I've seen concerning ETA ebauches, it's a "bog standard" in-house movement. Nothing unique, and frankly, of no better quality than the modified ETA movements used in Breitlings.

To be frank – and obviously it’s a personal choice – I reckon you should hold back and do some more research. It’s a buyer’s market, and the plethora of awesome watches available for five grand is amazing. But, if you’re certain you’ve narrowed it down to those three – I’d go the GMT

Yep, I totally agree with you about the Rolex 3186, except for the part about not being unique. As a movement it's unique to Rolex and you won't find the calibre 3186 in any other brand. Yes it's not a complicated movement, but it is a "Rolex only" movement. Just depends if that's important to you or not.

Yes, I misused the word “unique”. I meant “nothing particularly special or different”. Certainly, Rolex movements are of excellent quality. Indeed, if I had to choose a mechanical watch to last a decade of hard use without a service, it would be a Rolex Sub.

I have always had a soft spot for Pan Am so of the 3, I would tend toward the Rolex GMT.

A Rolex will always hold it's value better than a Breitling if this is a factor to consider for you.
