Post subject: | Am i doing something wrong ??? |
Hi Guys, reight I purchased my watch, a Breitling Superocean, made in 2000. Absolutely love it. It was serviced in 2006 and I have the receipt and all other docs etc. I wear it every day but take it off at night. Lately it has been stopping between 3 to 10 hours after i take it off. I have attempted to manually wind it. I know this is obvious but I am turning the crown clockwise as you look at it. It turns a few times and then clicks. This can be between three and seven full turns. I assume this indicates it is fully wound. It then works fora few hours, occasionally all night and stops the following night after a few hours of removing it. Also it seems to be losing about five minutes or so over a week when I wear in constantly?? I'm not sure if i am doing something wrong or I need to take it in. It has not abeen to an AD since I have had it so any recommendations would be appreciated. I am at Romford, Essex. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated, thanks Andy |

Give the watch 40 full turns to make sure that it is fully wound - you can't overwind an automatic and see if the problem comes back. Also, does it usually stop with the seconds or minute hand at the same time (i.e. at 20 seconds or 42 minutes) - that might be an indiaction of a problem in the running train. It does sound like it needs a trip to the AD. |

I have seen the other posts and note that it cannot be over wound, but why does it click? It is difficult to explain but it feels like it is clicking as it has reached it's full wind up. As for the stopping, i have not noted the second hand but will make a point of recording. Incidentily when I put it on a gain it starts working straight away when the auto kicks in.......... Is an authorised dealer the best person to take it to or are there better authorised repairers etc.. Apologise for my ignorance..... Andy |

The 'clicking' might be the mainspring slipping in the barrel, but it could equally well be part of the winding movement - it's tough to know without hearing it. In fact the part of the winding mechanism that prevents the winding mechanism from running in reverse when the mainspring has a power reserve is called a click! If it starts immediately when you put it on it sounds like a power reserve issue rather than anything in the running train. |

Maybe you are pulling the crown between positions 1 and 2 when you start winding it. |

bnewbie wrote: Maybe you are pulling the crown between positions 1 and 2 when you start to winding it. That's possible, that would mean that the castle gear is slipping, which might cause a click. Unscrew the crown and then wind it forwards in the position it naturally goes to when unscrewed. I also forgot to address the where to take it question. Take it to an AD and if it does need attention they will send to the repair centre. |

Sounds like it just needs more winding. 40 full turns like Roff said. To make sure you are in the correct crown position, pull it all the way out, and then push it back all the way in, but dont screw it down. Wind it from there. |

Went and got it from the kitchen. The second hand was at 1200hrs... stopped. Have wound it as advised, clicked every turn but did the full 40. Will wait and see the the morning brings.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cheers Andy |

I think you need a trip to the AD as roff suggests. I hear my slipper clutch when it is fully wound to 40 turns. When i wear it constant, i hear the slipper clutch kick in around 3 or 4 turns. It seems like your watch is fully wound up. Just take it to an AD and get it checked out. Now seems like a good time for a overhaul. Get the problem fixed and have basically a brand new ling to put back on your wrist |

Mainsprings in automatics don't "click" when they slip. The spring has a bridle that is a short spring coiled in the opposite direction. When the mainspring is wound in a winder and inserted into the barrel, the bridle is in contact with the wall of the barrel which has a layer of grease applied to it. When the spring is fully wound there is less pressure on the bridle and it will slip along the barrel wall. The grease lets the bridle slip smoothly, so it is almost imperceptable. The noise you are hearing is in the keyless works. I'm not going to guess because there are several things that could be happening. Unfortunately, it needs to go to the AD, sooner rather than later. ![]() |
