Hi all,

Just joined the forum so apologies if this has been asked before - i'm sure it probably has..... I'm considering purchasing a Breitling Emergency watch and have a couple of questions.
1. I'm sure I read somewhere that the transmitter works best if it kept dry - I'm intending to purchase mine as I sail. Does anyone have any information as to whether the signal will still transmit and if the distance transmitted is reduced due to water?
2. I know that SAR will continue to monitor the 121.5MHz channel and the likelihood is that a plane as opposed to Satellite will pick up the signal but has anyone heard whether it is the intention of Breitling to switch future production models to transmit on 406Mhz.

Any experiences of sailors with this watch would be greatly appreciated!

No switch to 406 - there's no point as the signal isn't strong enough for satellite monitoring.

The watch does not have great waterproof ratings, and likely because of the transmitter - 30 metres, but the now discontinued Emergency Mission had water resistance of 100 metres, and there are still a few around at ADs so that might be your better bet.

Thanks for the advice - I guess 30m or 100m doesn't make a huge difference unless i'm diving - if i'm sailing and end up 2m underwater then I have a problem!

Don't suppose you know if the signal is reduced when the transmitter is submerged?

Yes it will be reduced considerably, especially if the antenna is submerged. In fact it may be reduced to practically zero. The best spot for use if high ground, followed by flat seas, so by that train of thought it would seem to suggest that being submerged will really adversely affect the transmission capability.

Hmm, Damn - was hoping to justify the purchase in this way to my wife!! I guess i'll just review the whole Breitling range and start over! perhaps a Chrono Superocean!

You are probably better with an on board EPIRB anyway, and then you have more choice on watch :lol:
