Post subject:  How rough is too rough?

For the last 20 years, I've worn quartz watches- mostly Luminox....

I have spit wood, worked on cars, worked out and even drunk wrestled friends into the pool on the 4th of July!

Now that I have a Breitling on my wrist, I feel like I have to take it off when I sleep so I don't bang it against the headboard!!!!

What is the truth about shock and impacts with these mechanical monsters? Can I even wear it on a roller coaster?
I'm chaperoning oe of my son's class trips to an amusement park Friday. I want to know if I need to leave it home and wear my "rugged" Luminox?

Please advise...... Actual "I've done........." with my Ling would be nice.

PS: Let's add shooting practice to the list of "Can I wear" scenarios.

HAHO and HALO jumps from appx. 30k ft. (one was from 34.4 k ft) while wearing a Superocean.

With a mechanical movement the danger is in sudden movement, or sudden stops, particluarly at the wrist.

The most obvious example, that really can cause problems, is golf - there are watch companies specialising in 'golf proof' mechancial watches and they have measured forces of over 100G at the moment of impact.

Roller coasters and the like will be fine, and while I'm not sure that I would shoot in one, the impact is largely away from the wrst so it probably will be OK.

The only other type of activity that might cause problems is harsh vibration - jack hammer, chain saw, etc that can unseat the jewels.

The only activities I choose not to wear my watch for are:
Jogging/Active sports: Too heavy.
Carpentry (Home construction): I aint that good with a hammer  Actually, it's to prevent major scratches and it can sometimes just get in the way.

Any light work, gardening/lawn mowing, home maintenance, drinking scotch...etc. I don't think twice about wearing any watch. They can all be polished. They can all be cleaned.

Yes, I've played golf with my SuperOcean and Skyland, but actually stopped doing that recently. Not because I thought I would damage the watch, but because the glare off the bracelet was distracting (I'm being serious) and they're a bit heavy.

I buy watches to wear them and enjoy them. Everyday scratches and dings don't annoy me. I view them as memories.

I do everything with mine, including golf.

As Bnewbie mentioned, I actively partake in shooting competitions (shotgug, rifle and handgun) with my SA on. Up to 600 rounds in some big shoots, no problems yet. I would not give roller coasters a thought. :lingsrock:

With my automatics including B'lings I have done:
Chainsaw
Hammering/pickaxe
Yardwork (gas powered weedeater, blower, mower).
Mountain Bike racing
Golf
Baseball
Amusement Park
Wrestling with dog, wife and friends, both sober and drunk

None of the above have negatively affected the watch other than cosmetics.

My Superocean Prof. (2001) has survived 15 to 20,000+ rounds ranging from 5.56, 7.62, .50 cal., .45, .40 cal, shotguns etc.; numerous helo insertion waterborne drops, and 7 years of operations with my team. It's only been serviced once due to magnetization. It has held up like a champ, save a few scratches and dings to the case. It is still a handsome timepiece that I would wear anywhere (and I do) and I get compliments on it frequently. Here's the amazing thing, over the last 6 months, I've kept a close watch on whether it loses or gains any significant time. It ranges from being alomost ten seconds fast to being 5 seconds slow. I have not had to make any adjustments since the last time it was serviced. I think this is almost unheard of w/ an automatic. Hope it stays like that for a long time, but parts do wear. I'm not going to get it serviced until it really starts acting up. I think I've got the best thing going, for now. :guns:
