Are those the bonus babies who go out and blow that big signing bonus once they get it on whatever big shiny thing they see at the jeweler?

I'd say there are far more of "them" than "us". Most people that buy and wear high end timepieces do so for the status and image, not the appreciation of the watch. Us WIS are the minority.

My uncle and I discussed watches a while back and he said "Oh I have a $25K watch in the safety deposit box that my wife bought me in '72 (yes $25K in '72!!)" I said "wow, what is it?"... his reply "uh I dunno, some swiss thing" I'm just dying to know what he has.

i no exacly what you mean! the other day i walked past a director of a law firm that works next to our office and she had a steelfish and i said ahh nice watch! and then showed her my seawolf and then she said ah we have the same watch...... then she said its nice but it keeps crap time.... i said how so, she said oh it just keeps stopping if i leve it. i said you know its a automatic rite? she gave me a blank look and i said well you should keep it in your watch winder.... she had no idia what i was on about!

some people just buy it for the "oh look at me i have a expensive watch" factor.

see i have only bought one second hand and i wouldnt do it again. looked great in the pics, serviced 4 months prior to purchse by an approved centre, get it and its missing a warranty book, running 22 secs a day off the pace and the bezel makes a squeal when rotated. £500 worth of breitling servicing later and its perfect, given that i only saved £700 onn the rrp at the end of production def not worth it. i could have bought a brand new version with my discount for less.

sorry for the rant but you mentioned shand and its a delicate subject for me at the mo.

something to ponder: maybe they should make you take a test before the purchase.
1. how do you pronounce 'breitling'?
2. do you have to wind an automatic?
3. what is the difference between a 'breitling' and a 'bentley'?
4. is breitling the make or the model?

If the customer has to answer all 4 questions before the sales communication starts, I can hardly sell a watch per week anymore. But Breitling is still a lot easier to pronounce, than Maurice Lacroix (have to hide a smile all the time, when they try) and I heare some very strange brands sometimes, where I need a couple of minutes and some questions to find out, what the customer means, although I know the brand.

That can't be worse than a salesperson at an AD calling it a Montbrill-i-ant. I asked a salesperson (who is generally fairly knowledgeable about Breitling) if I could try on the Montbrillant. She replied, "Ummm, oh, you mean the Mont - brilliant." I almost slapped her.

Or a how about when an AD calls it a "deployment." Drives me bonkers.

It's known as both a deployant and deployment!

Both names are correct.

I know that both names are correct when referring to that type of buckle. But doesn't Breitling only use the term deployant? Maybe I'm just being a little too picky about this one.

I was in a coffee shop recently and there was a guy working at his computer, I spied a TT chronomat and said, hey, nice Chronomat and he said, no, it's a Breitling I think! It turns out he wanted a good swiss watch and went to the jeweler and said sell me something Swiss and Steel and Gold and this is what he ended up with, the Brand name meant nothing to him!
I actually quite envy him that in a way, he just wanted a good quality reliable Swiss made watch..he got it!
