Ok, after starting the Chronograph thread, I have another question. Have you ever used the slide rule? |

Sadly, my eyesight is now not good enough to read the numbers so I never use it. The most practical use is adding sales tax. |

I love the style of Navitimers, but have to say I never use the slide rule. Guess I'm just very good at math ![]() |

Only when I'm pick'n up birds - if they comment on my watch, which they often do, I'll ask for their help in working out how the bezel works. Gets 'em in nice & close - and despite allegations of an engineering degree, I quite honestly don't know how the f$%N thing works! I don't want to know - I like to work with the mystery of it - total watch geek ha ha! |

Apart from trying it out with the aid of the manual when I bought my first Navi.............. never! The calculator on my mobile phone is much easier! |

Let me be the first to say......... You mean it moves ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Like Driver8, only when I first got one - now it's only micro adjustments to ensure it remains properly aligned. |

I actually use the slide rule on my Air Wolfe quite a bit. I have used it to set currency ratios when I travel and I also use it when I am flying. |

Like D8 and Roff I worked it all out when I first got my Navitimer but since then I only play with it once a month or so to keep my hand in. rebel_1 wrote: I actually use the slide rule on my Air Wolfe quite a bit. Currency ration on slide rule: Let's say you are in Thailand and the exchange rate is $1 = 43 Baht; you would place 43 on the outside over the 10 on the inside; so if something you are looking at is 550 Baht, that item cost $12.80. |

As a pilot I use it daily for ratios(ie fuel usage, speed/distance etc), also for currency exchange rates too. |

Use mine when I'm flying for revised ETAs, actual groundspeed etc. (Same with the chrono, I use it for drift correction and groundspeed). Unfortunately, this isn't on a 'ling, but on a cheapo watch. I'm still saving for a 'ling (or several ![]() ![]() |

Same here - use that on my B-1 all the time. Really easy and 'at-a-glance' conversion. Mind you the EURO:GBP:USD is now virtual parity so little use now ![]() |

The only opreration that i do with it is the calculation of the descent initiation point during a non presicion aproach. For example, if the aproach begins at 4500 ft and the runway threshold is at sea level, you take the 4500 ft minus 50 ft (crossing height of the threshold) and divide it by 3.18 (constat angle of descent) and you get the point (in these case 14.3 nm) at wich you have to initiate a constant descent until landing. Best regards. Gabriel. |

I'm with the other flyers, mainly use the slide rule for fuel consumption calcs and ETA's to next way points etc. it's sometimes quite nice to fly around one of the busiest air spaces in the world (south-east UK), and be able to answer any question London information can throw at you, by a simple twist of a dial. As before, it is also very handy for 'at a glance' currency conversions. But whatever the calculation to be solved, I think it should be used, after all, that's what it's been designed for, and it all comes in with the price. ![]() |

I'm not sure if this link has been posted before but I find it quite useful for providing my brain a refresher course in the use of the slide rule. It's in German and I haven't been able to find an English version of it but it's farily simple to use. Clilck on Multiplication (Multiplikation), division , distance, etc. below the graphic of the slide rule and it will show you how the calculations are derived.
