Okay, so we can move our next Phoenix Chapter meeting to Florida. FEAR will need to provide his own "sale inducing substances" but with enough of them, maybe we could at least save enough to cover our airfare.

I thought that has always been the point & motivation for developing your own in-house mvmnt -- to increase perceived quality & image of the whole line so that the brand can justify ridiculous price increases??

Isn't that also the point of why Swatch is not going to sell ETA anymore -- so as to protect the Swiss watch-making industry against competition based on who can offer the most discounts / bang for buck / value for money -- which is never a good thing when it comes to luxury goods?

Now we're talking! Anti-trust. Love a good anti-trust theory. And I'll bet some guy named Rockefeller is the silent silent partner in the big manufacturing concerns. Ya can't shake DNA.

That may be the point, but I see three problems with it, as far as Breitling is concerned. One, most of the watches Breitling sells still do not feature in-house movements. I think that's still the case with the Bentley line as well, which is the highest priced of all Breitling ranges. Breitling's in-house movements are still in their fledgling stages. They're still working out the bugs.

This leads to the the second problem: the perceived increase in quality isn't there yet. Breitling is charging a premium for their in-house models, but if the reaction on this board is any indication, many people don't think the watches warrant their prices. Breitling is clearly trying to place themselves on the same footing as JLC and the like, but they're not there yet. The problem is, they're starting to price their models as though they are.

This is exacerbated by what I see as the third problem: most of the newest models suck. Breitling is charging more and more for models that exemplify less and less of what has been best about the brand. (The Navi 01 is an exception, but it's priced so high that I don't think it matters.) Of course that's a personal choice, and it has yet to be seen how the market at large will accept the direction Breitling is going. I can't help but feel, though, that alienating their core clientele is not a good thing.

By the way, your signature line gives me a headache.

Yeah...

When it comes to luxury goods, I find it very difficult to have any kind of logical discussion imho. With enough advertising dollars, you can get consumers to believe anything (baring obvious shoddy workmanship).

And if you think prices of Swiss watches are ridiculous, just go shopping with the wife once in a while -- PVC leatherette, threads, and some chromed hardware makes the latest $3K Chanel handbag...
