Regardless of what the price increases are, the market will dictate if people actually pay them.

Perhaps it is because I live in Chicago, but most Breitling dealers downtown offer discounts right off the bat to any schmo who walks in the door - even if they don't ask. My particular dealer (granted I provide him with lots of business) will give me over 30% off a new Breitling if I wanted one. So for me, the price increases are the least of my concerns...Breitling making bubble gum watches with lots of colors and rubber and frankenwatches that they made from the parts bin is what keeps me from buying one - now and in the future. The price increases have nothing to do with it in my eyes.

I'm growing more and more interested in the fine German and Swiss watches from smaller companies. Their quality is just as good as a Ling's, use the same movements, for vastly less money. Many of these are truly hand built by a craftsman, of very interesting and distinctive design (especially the Germans IMO) and often hand regulated to produce extreme accuracy. I don't think I could justify a new Ling at the asking price when there are so many others produce such quality. Used, yes.

Driver - I agree with many things that you wrote, but the reality is that most of the people who buy these watches are not buying them to support their hobby - they are buying them as functional/reliable timepieces (in the case of an aviator or sailor or diver, etc.), or they are buying them as a status symbol.

I refuse to buy another Breitling at this moment in time because the brand has been diminished with Breitling's gimmicks and chasing of fads like colored bezels and hands. With a lack of in-house movements, I cannot justify paying close to retail for a new Ling, let alone the increases Breitling is trying to get for its new timepieces. I mean, 3 new SuperOcean models within 18 months? Rubber bezels and colored bezels and hands?

If I want a bubble gum watch, I'll buy a Swatch from the 1980s...I'm not dropping $5k+ on a Breitling.

I used to not give Rolex a second thought because I didn't want to be "that guy" who had a rolex like everyone else. The more that I've learned about this "hobby," the more I realized that Rolex has been doing it right all along.

Bingo.

That said I dont think I could stomach a Rolex as everytime I see one it reminds me of the Submariner that was ripped off from me.
I do love the plain stainless Sea Dweller.

One way to think of breitling price increases is to recognize they are pulling up the value of used watches. Perhaps your collection ?

Seems natural to dislike price increases, but that said, has anyone seen a decreasing price?
So if prices only go up, it is the pace by which they go up, that will change (up & down).

Comparing the rise in watch prices to the rise in income makes most of us clench, but is in line with everything else - middle class is getting squeezed, everywhere.
IMHO, if you consider watch prices to be high today, it will most likely be much higher in the future.

Hope this makes sense.

That's correct, on May 1st Zenith reduced some models by as much as $1,000.

Any thoughts on what lead to that price reduction? Any info on the web that can explain that?

Get a copy of the July 2011 IW Magazine, it will explain it in detail. A New CEO took over the Zenith brand, he introduced some new models in line with their storied history, and changed the price strategy to more market appropriate prices.

Part of the well documented repositioning of Zenith by the new (and young) head of the brand.

I was curious about that myself. Do tell.

The kiss of death for brand image and perceived value.

If the Elite Captain is anything to go by, there may be something to that theory.
