But for non-chronograph models (aeromarine) that are relying on older technology, are initial R & D costs and economies of scale really going to be that hard to achieve? Isn't this technology already there? I am wondering if Breitling can make a “more-or- less- in-house movement” at lower costs than expected. I'm no expert, though...

There is very little new in watchmaking from a pure mechanics standpoint - power is tranferred from a mainspring through a running train and is regulated by an escapement - it's been that way for hundreds of years.

However, if you are designing a new movement then you want to bring something unique to the party - otherwise it's just a modification of an existing design and we are back to ETA / Valjoux (or another movement manufacturer).

If you are designing a new movement then you need to invest in development, prototyping, testing, etc and then the changes to production equipment to produce the new parts. As I noted in an earlier post the costs won't be as bad as for the B01 that they spent more than five years developing, but the costs will still be substantial. Consider also on a non chrono movement that Breitling sells far fewer of those each year so there are fewer units to pay for those costs.

I love this forum, tis quite the learning curve..

Been to my AD yesterday and I finally ordered mine.

A liitle update on the Steelfish:

He told me that he had not heard of a Steelfish with an in-house movement, at least not for the moment. But he would be immensely surprised if Breitling discontinued the actual Steelfish in favor of one with an in-house movement. That would mean a $2'000 price increase, not to mention a different design. And that would strip the Breitling range with one of the its most affordable pieces (confirming what is has been said here by many). And Breitling does not want to go upmarket ignoring potential buyers of the Avenger/SO category, also given the fact that the the SO II costs more than its predecessor and has a very different design.

Asked if any more B01 movements will be be introduced in the range, he said that there is absolutely no information from Breitling on that, even if it is clear that there will be more B01 models. But as far as a BB B01 is concerned, that's all distant rumors for the moment.

Asked about the difference of discounts between Switzerland and the US, for example, he said that in the US ADs work with a much lesser margin compared to here, hence a 30% discount (or more?) against about half of that over here.

The problem with all these rumours is that that is exactly what they are - just rumours!

Additionally, notification and leaks of developments don't follow a strict "top down" hierarchy route. Thus you can find a previously knowledgeable person completely in the dark about something, and someone who you wouldn't expect to know that much in possession of some latest gem of information. For example, one of the main AD's I use hadn't even heard about the Chronomat B01 LE when I called him, even though it'd be discussed on here for almost 2 weeks.

On the question in hand - no-one knows at this stage what is coming from Breitling next. I've heard (and again, just rumours but it makes complete sense) that Breitling is working on a non-chronograph in-house movement, but where it will go is anyone's guess. Maybe they'll put it in a Steelfish B01 and leave the original Steelfish to run alongside like they did with the Chronomat. Or maybe they'll not use it in an Aeromarine watch at all. Or maybe they aren't even working on a non-chrono movement at all! We just don't know....., so until we see official pictures and/or official press releases, I'm taking all of this with a handful of salt at this stage.

Got some bad news from my AD today: he won't be able to receive the Steelfish I have on order before late December

See, being near the source doesn't always mean short delivery times

Just got word from my AD, IT just arrived :D That's a full 4 weeks before the initial delivery date.

Problem is, due to a very heavy schedule, I won't be able to fetch it before late next week, but at least I know it's here and waiting for me :lingsrock:
