My wife hates watches. She cant tell the difference between a Super Avenger and a Hercules
(this ignorance works to my advantage) :D

I have a separate secret bank account. Whenever I have to buy a watch (online) I simply wire the cash and make sure the watch is delivered before noon, when she is 100% of the time away from the house; package arrives, I pick it up...she never sees it....100% accurate; haven't had a problem, so far. .
If its a local purchase, I simply withdraw the cash and pay up....again...she never notices a thing....

Its very simple and very easy. She knows I am the MAN, I have the MAN parts, which means I am in charge. I'm new to this forum but I've noticed so many of you on here are so scared of your wives. Do they make all the money? Are you married to feminists? I'm all for womans rights, but never it a million years would I be scared to make a purchase because of a woman. Maybe I was raised different, or maybe its because I am young (26) but there is no such thing has "convince". I feel for you guys out there without this luxury. Marry an Italian, or a Puerto Rican woman and you'll never have these worries.

I'm not scared, it's just easier to lie, and good practice for the pursuit of my other hobbies. I could take your approach and 'be the man' no problem, but then she would expect me to act like a man, and be in charge of things like taking care of stuff when it breaks and making phone calls and organizing repairs... blah blah blah... it's waaaaay easier like this. I already have a full time job, i sure as hell don't need to walk around my house pretending im in charge... that's like asking to do chores. eff that. But, to each his own... I'd rather be on the couch scratching MAN parts, than taking responsibility for the household because i have them...

Even with the danger of soundin like a complete wimp, here goes. We share each others enthusiasms. Both get so much more out of everything. She´s the one who actually bought me my Skyland as a wedding present because she knew how long I´ve been meaning to get a B. (I got her something very special too ofcourse) And now she´s saying what a difference it has compared to my old fashion watch "crap".

I return the favour by supporting her with what she´s excited about. Even if it´s shoes. I think it´s great she sees on effort in her looks and I encourage that. It would be much worse if she wouldn´t, so why wouldn´t I be interested.

I told her that next, in one or two years I´ll buy a Navitimer. She said it´s a really cool watch for special occasions. I never ask permission but we do discuss these things. She was there when I bought the Skyland and probably she´ll be with me when I´m buying the next Ling too.

...And to make sure you don´t get the wrong idea: If you would ask her, that her guy had to be a push over, she´d laugh and tell you how far from the truth that was.

The best way I have found is to bring her something too, ie: diamond ring. As she is admireing her new sparkly shinny expensive ring and thinking you are the best thing going. You say how do you like my new watch? I picked it up when I picked up your ring. It has worked every time I have tried it. Be sure to spring the watch at the perfect time, to early before she thinks your the best or to late when she relizes how much you spent can spell disaster. Timing is everything.

Good luck,

My wife and I make all financial decisions together. We both agree on how much discretionary income we have and agree on the priorities for how to spend it. The only time that she doesn't know about a watch purchase is if it's for her.

At the end of the day, as long as the money goes to the necessities first (including planning for the future) then we don't worry about the rest.

In fact, she's likely to be prepared to spend more than me - I just found out the price of a piece I was considering and feel that it is too high with the exchange rate issues, but she is still encvouraging me to get it.

Second that motion!

The wife does not like watches and wishes I wouldn't spend so much time researching them. But, she understands I have an addiction and we agree on a budget. I can't sneak one past her or anything like that, so straightforward is the way to go. If you're looking for quick bribery, I gotta agree with dbniner... Tiffany's box will solve just about anything! :D

My wife and I keep our finances seperate. We've done this for 15 years and have almost never argued about money. So as long as we both meet our monthly financial obligations we are free to endulge our personal hobbies. Hers are her horse, clothing, scrapbooking and such and mine are watches and my motorcycle. Personally, I'd never put myself in a position to have to ask permission to buy something, but that is just me.

It almost sounds we have the same life. :) Well, except for the motorcycle, but I'll add whisky to the list instead.

If we would have a shared economy I don't see a point in lying about a purchase - it will only come back to you later and it's rather disrespectul IMHO.

Good post! The way you put that really put a smile on my face.

Hmmmm... maybe I should get her a watch, the same time as me.
