Personally, I would like to see you save that money for maybe 10 years and then consider. If you were to put that cash away at a modest return of 4% a year you would be able to save an additional $1600 in 10 years. I know personally my tastes have changed dramatically when I was 14 compared to when I was 24.

This is an interesting thread.

I have to say I agree about your tastes possibly changing a little over the years, but is that necessarily a bad thing? My watch tastes certainly have. When I started Uni an Omega Seamaster Pro was THE watch as far as I was concerned, so that was what I bought. The funny thing was I had a choice of that or a Superocean...... and I went for the SMP. Over the years I've owned a number of pieces that I have subsequently traded, but I am finally getting there in terms of watches that I KNOW I will never sell.

What I would say is if you can 100% afford to buy a nice watch now, then go for it as there's no "minimum age" for ownership in my opinion. But equally just be aware that you may end up trading on in future if your tastes change a little over time.

HOWEVER, (and without sounding parental here!) I think you need to think long and hard as to whether that cash might not be better spent elsewhere. At the end of the day these watches are luxury goods, pure and simple. That $4000 may be better spent elsewhere - in a savings fund for college or university...... or a first car..... or whatever. When I was 14 I didn't have access to anywhere near $4000, so who knows what I would've done with it if I had!

I don't want to dissuade you at all, but it kind of depends what $4000 means to you. If it's $4000 out of a $50,000 trust fund then using it to buy a watch is infinitely more justifiable than if it's $4000 from $4500 of life savings. If it's the former I'd say "go for it!" : if it's the latter I'd say "no way!".

And if you DO buy it, NEVER EVER wear it to school. You'll attract idiots and it'll undoubtedly get damaged.

I think it's pretty much been said. I would love to have had the opportunity, and 14 isn't too young for sure, but just be completely comfortable that you want to spend that much - if you regret it afterwards there isn' much recourse - you won't get all of that money back, and it may sour you for life on Breitling.

Hi, kid,

The first thing I have to ask is, how do your parents feel about it? Have
you even told them about your dream? If you walked into a Breitling AD
with a pocket full of cash and tried to buy a watch, I very much doubt
that they'd sell one to you. "Come back with your parents, kid; then
we'll talk" is what you would probably hear. :?

That being said, if your folks agree and you've got the money, then knock yourself
out -- have a ball trying them on, and deciding which one you want, which
one really grabs you. If you're a normal-sized fourteen-year-old, watches like
the Super Avenger would be too huge for your wrist (you might have to grow
into it :) ) Maybe a Chrono Super Ocean would be the ticket.

Whichever watch you buy, do not wear it to school -- it would either get stolen
or banged up -- which would be horrible after investing so much into it. Maybe
for special occasions, or dates. I can't imagine a young hottie who wouldn't
be impressed by such a watch. Good luck and stay in touch with us,
okay?

Steve

Well, I imagine you will either be pegged as some rich kid, or no one will really think the watch belongs to you anyway. Then in the process of defending yourself, you get into a fight, or some bussie nicks it from you, etc etc. Also at that age people are looking at kids and college funds, so I wonder if you told people older than you what it is and (hopefully it won't get steered this way) how much it costs, the piece actually may become more of a source of embarrassment than pride.

hey everyone, all i wanted to say was thankyou for all the replies to this thread. It's hard to decide whether to get the watch or not, but everyone's responses will ultimately help me decide one or the other. Thanks again, i'll definitely keep you guys up to date on my status. At this point, i'm still unsure. However much i want the watch, there's still that fear of it getting lsot or stolen.

Thanks again,

I dont think there is anything wrong with you buying it if you really want it, and though it may contradict my last response a bit, I would suggest finding a less expensive alternative. Maybe even find yourself a nice used Steelfish for $1500 or so. You can fill the Breitling void and still have a nice chunk of change left. One thing youll learn later on in life is that having some money in the bank gives you a great feeling. A couple of grand for a 14 year old is a nice savings. I know people my age (26) that dont even have that.

ya RJRJRJ, you make a good point, the savings thing. Ok maybe half of the people reading this thread will start laughing but my friend and i are really trying to make our own business doing whatever, were not sure yet, but the purpose is to make some money for ourselves, maybe get myself that breitling and him? Idk. But my point is I'm probably gonna get it one way or another if i can get my hands on the money. BUT my parents, after talking to them about it, agreed to let me go for it, under one condition, I earn double the cost of the watch. So if i wanted a watch that was $4000, I'd have to earn $8000. Tough, but by the time i earn that much, i'll either still want the watch, or be left with a ton of money, so i think that's a good idea.

O yah and to your question siglo vi, my wrist, well im not sure how big it is, Im pretty sure it's around 6 inches, if not bigger. Ya i guess it is kinda small..... I would look more towards the smaller watches so maybe you could take super avenger off my list.

[quote="RJRJRJ"]...I would also say that wearing it to school is probably not in your best interest. You may be putting yourself and your watch at risk for being damaged/robbed/stolen/alienated etc. Just my opinion...[/quote

I agree with RJRJRJ on this one. Especially with it being stolen. PLUS, after keeping it safe and well guarded for a while, that will be a great piece to show your kids about the value of hardwork..."I bought my first Breitling when I was 14, 20 years later I just bought my 10th and Breitling is sending me my own custom Bomberjacket!!" I could see it now!! Let us know which one you decide on.

Being an AD, I wouldn't say no to you if you wanted one. :D And I doubt the other AD friends I have in our region would say no. It would make my day to help a 14 yr old buy his first Breitling. You'd for sure be the talk of the town.

I think that owning a Breitling would be a huge treat and a luxury. However, I do not think it is right for a 14 year old to have a Breitling. I would go to a local jewelry store (or Macy's) and buy a watch for about $250-400 and see how you like having a semi-nice watch. Go ahead and wear it to school, show it to all your friends. If you like it and if you still think it would be a good idea to pursue your dream of owning the world's greatest watch, then I would continue earning money and when you graduate high school buy a Breitling, after you have a car and a college fund. Many years later when you have a family, I would give that watch to your son when he graduates high school and have him do the same. Basically, get it BUT not now.

I don't think I'd go for the Breitling. When I was 13 my parents bought me a Tag Heuer formula 1 in the Cayman Islands (used to go diving there each spring break... hence my love for watches due to going in all those high end jewelry stores). I felt so weird and spoiled wearing it around my friends. It was my even my birthday gift and I still felt spoiled (it only costed my parents $300 cause I paid for some of it too). When I was in High School I bought a Hamilton Khaki Navy automatic, CWC issed divers watch, Marathon GSAR, and Seiko Diver. All with my hard earned money. I'm 19 now and can say that I still like the Tag but I'd rather not wear it much. If I were you I'd get a Seiko Divers watch. Save that money cause let me tell you, you will want that cash when you want to buy a car or at least put that money towards the car. When you graduate high school get that watch.

I'm back again with another response. It certainly is an interesting thread - to say the least - and I have enjoyed reading each and every comment.
What is good for one individual, is not necessarily good for another. All of my life I have been very independent, and most things that I do, and have done, are not what the majority would do. I have been fortunate enough to enjoy lots of luxury items for most of my life, but did so because I wanted them and appreciated them, and did not have them for the intention of impressing others or to show off. I was always confindent about the choices I made, and the items I had were worn with pride and without pretense.
If you get the Breitling, my guess would be that you will want to wear it all the time. If you are comfortable with that, then so be it. One can only worry so much about the consequences of having luxury goods such as these watches, sometimes you have to try and not let that bother you, and just wear and enjoy the things.
You have to do what is important to you in life, as long as your actions do not negatively impact others. The Golden Rule: "Do Unto Others, as You would have them do unto You." I don't see how having a beautiful watch could go against this belief. You are already sensitive, mature and thoughtful enough to think about how your actions could affect others.
More food for thought. So, go out and work hard and thoroughly enjoy the watch when you get it!
Cheers,
Carl
