The only expensive watch I have owned, other than an Omega Constellation which my Dad gave me in 1966, is a Breitling. I suppose if I ever came into money, I would vary my purchases more. However, in the $2500-$5000 bracket, which is where I fit now, Breitling is still my choice.
Speaking of being dependable: My SuperOcean, purchased in 1997, ran for 10 years without even a small servicing. I finally had a major service done in 2007. Don't get me wrong, I am not proud that I did not get a major service done at 5 years. I simply did not know about it then, and the watch continued to run perfectly. Just gaining a minute or two every few weeks.
Speaking of resale/deprecation: Thanks to my first Breitling, a Colt Quartz with rubber strap, purchased in 1992, I was able to get my SuperOcean. The Colt cost me around $575. cad, and in 1997 the SuperOcean was priced at around $1800. My AD gave me $800. towards the SuperOcean, taking the Colt as a trade. Maybe the high-end watches were not selling well in 1997, regardless I still appreciate the amount I got for the Colt.
I love my Blacksteel, and love my Steelfish even more. As most of us in these forums, I am constantly "window shopping" for new watches, of all makes and models. I have not seen a watch, at any price, that suits me better, or that I think looks better, than the Steelfish. It is now priced at around $3000, I got mine before the price went up for about $2000. with the discount my AD gave me. With my financial situation now, it looks like the Steelfish will be with me for a long time, and I shall wear it with pride.
A friend of mine has a Vacheron Constantion, a beautiful chronograph about 5 years old. However, when he can afford one, he really wants to bet a Breitling, too. Obviously, Breitling has a very wide appeal.
If I have it as long as I had my SuperOcean, I will be almost 70 years old!
Anyway, I respect all comments and opinions about Breitling, and this is a small summation about some of my feelings about Breitlings.
Cheers,
Carl

yes it is true Landrover vehicles have a dubious records when it comes to reliability but there is only so far one can go in making the needless comparison between watches and cars. My loose comparison was really more focused around brand image i.e. big and brash looks, new-money and old-money clientele, luxury etc.

You are right. I just like writing about Tata Motors.

don't be to hard on yourself archie. your posts in particular are primarily designed to spark debate, something which forums are all about. if people were not going to have different reactions, hostile or otherwise, there would be no point to posting anything

Well I have not read all of Archie's threads, but the ones I have read have been interesting. And I have to say people seem to be picking on him because he is different and they can.

If he breaks a rule, the admins are here for that, if he doesnt and you do not enjoy his posts, ignore them! Otherwise you are either causing trouble yourself or just being a bully. And that goes for all of us.

Back on topic, interesting comparisions. I always thought Breitling and Panerai were closest to BMW as far as cars go, somewhat problematic but make up for it with style and great engineering.

Range Rovers are crap, we had one and it cost us more in maintanance than initial price untill we finally got rid of the dreadfull thing. Never again! It looked great though.....

If I posted anything you took as hostile please accept my apologies, I was simply joining in the discussion, while pontificating about Tata Motors. In general I find your posts off the beaten path in largely a good way. Sometimes they drift, but don't we all. :)

Hello Guys,
Whilst I am sure the Indians will do Land Drover proud with unreliability even the Brits would be proud of.....

we need to understand the RELIABILTY THING is not solely an Indian thing....

NO - Land Drover/Range Rover have been HORRORS for years.....

Speaking of which.... does anyone remember Jaguar in the 70s..... that was a true POS.

I personally am shocked that Alfa Romeo can use mostly Fiat parts yet make a car which is a complete POS - the Selespeed aka Sillyspeed is the most stupid idea the Italians have come up with....... I have spent over $8,000- on my Selespeed system.....

Thank God I woke up and sold the Alfa.... we now have a Honda Accord.

NO PROBLEMS AT ALL WITH THE HONDA....

Interesting comparisons Archie, pretty much bang on in a loose way. I also own a Cartier and think the BMW comparison is correct. Might be even a Porsche comp. Some people need to chill a bit and thicken their skin. I'd like to think that most Breitling owners are less anal than what's being exhibited here.

women.

Patek Philippe/AP-Meryl Streep/Helen Mirren. 'Nuff Said.

Glashutte/JLC/IWC-Julia Roberts. Classy, great eye candy for any occasion.

Breitling-Latest and Greatest ModelActress; shiny, new, everybody wants a piece TODAY, but longevity/mainstream desirability very much an open question to be decided by the test of time.

Rolex-The Raquel Welch of luxury watches. Basic look and styling hasn't changed much in 40 odd years but still attractive to many and likely to remain so in the foreseeable future.

Tag and Omega-Paris Hilton of watches.....constantly making an effort to remain culturally relevant but in doing so continues to reduce desirability through over the top behavior and brand mismanagement.

Seiko/Citizen-America Ferrera. Functional, take 'em to dinner/movie if there are no other choices, good for a short-term relationship until circumstances allow you to move up the food chain.

I think a lot of it stems from the extreme contrasting opinions expressed by a single person. One day Breitling is the best watch in the world, and the next day its garbage.
