Does a NATO have to go all the way behind the watch head? Couldn't it be manufactured or modified to use lugs?

Yes, but then it wouldn't be a nato! That is, the nato by definition runs through both lugs so that if you're parachuting into a war zone (or more likely snag it on a calculator) or some such rough-tough activity, and one of the springbars comes out, you don't lose the watch because the nato is a continuous loop which goes through the other bar. That's the functional origin.

As I said above you can get the nato look if not function in a 2-piece strap, Maratac for one make one:

Thank you for that. I often wondered, and now I know :-)

You're welcome Gyp.

As an aside, if anyone knows any UK suppliers of Maratac I'd like to know. I've had headaches trying to get straps mail order from the US.

Same here--I just learned something new!

Of course, why someone would want to parachute out of an airplane, particularly with an aviation watch, is beyond me. :) I do everything I can when flying so I would NEVER have to jump out.

(or get shot down for that matter) ;)

I agree. It looks great in the NATO. Congrats on the watch.

I handled one this week (On ProIII bracelet) and was underwhelmed. I find the new "Oyster" bracelet generic looking over the ProII with its signature diagonal links that I much prefer. The watch now looks too big and thicker (And feels a bit heavier too). The dial is OK. But the general vibe of having it on my hand is that what made the Aerospace special is no longer there. Now it looks like any other watch and one that has been visually changed for the sake of doing so and charge another $200 extra for the favor.

The movement is the same exact Caliber 79SQ as before and the crown is as challenging to use at first as in the 42mm Avantage. This was my biggest disappointment.

I would have been more interested if they had added extra functions to the basic movement (Say separate alarm for the second timezone, lap times for the chrono) and an easier to turn crown, a la B-1-Airwolf, I would have been far more interested.

Finally, don't care for the skeletonized hour hand. The signature Aerospace hands have been replaced for something that cheapens the look of the dial. I generally don't care for skeleton hands.

Here is my message to Breitling: Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

The changes are purely cosmetic. If you already own or thinking about getting an Aerospace, the 42mm 2005-2012 Aerospace is where is at (Get yours while you can new or in the preowned market where the Aerospace is a terrific value). Functionality wise, you are not giving up anything and have a watch that to my eye looks more Breitling and is more in line with the iconic Aerospace. To me the EVO is aimed at people that already own a pre-2005 Aerospace or for those who never cared for the Avantage.

If you have to have a bigger watch and the latest and greatest (Even if the movement offer nothing new), the EVO is for you.

FYI, the Evo on ProIII bracelet retails for $4295 ($1100 for the bracelet and $3,195 for the head). The outgoing 42mm retails for $4095 on Pro II bracelet.

If shopping for an Aerospace, compare both models before deciding. I know I did.

I don't necessarily agree that the changes represent "improvements" over my bronze-dialed version of the outgoing model, but I think do think this is a very nice update of the model. That's a real beauty you got there!

Agreed. I much prefer the 42mm model by a long mile. I really wanted to like the new EVO, but was underwhelmed. Not good for a first hand impression.

I just got the older model with the textured dial in silver. Much prettier than the EVO IMHO.

Thanks bud. The versatility of this watch with various natos is awesome. Just got navy in this weekend.

Nice Evo, very Tactical looking.Ive played with one a while back, gotta say its very well executed, and the rider tabs seem to be a bit more subdued, your clothes will thank you.

I believe the movement is identical so there are no new features as such. I think Breitling missed a trick by not putting pushers on it; it's still unusable for left-handers. Looks like the smaller numerals have more lume, which is always useful and I guess could be considered a "feature"!

Not sure I dig the shaved arms, though - I mean who does that?

I went to look at the Evo and advantage aero spaces yesterday and came away with a bronze pinstriped
advantage. Both excellent watches but the defining reasons behind my decision to buy the advantage was the bracelet, hour hand and the special price received from Ricardo at Andrew Micheals Jewellers.
Love the new boxes and the new e warranty screen with all the watches details plus were bought and model number etc.

Col.

I seem to be in the minority here but having owned every varient of the Aerospace at one time or another, I prefer the EVO over all of the previous generations. For me, the size is perfect, the bracelet a minimalist work of art, and the skeleton hour hand a nice design touch. In walking the dog every morning before the sun is even close to rising, I have found that you can read the polished numerals by star light [!] as they seem to pick up the slightest amount of light. My only minor quibble is that I still don't like the font. Of course, this might be the only new Breitling that I actually like outside of the Navitimer 01...
