Instead of just Breitlings, why don't we just have a greatest watch contest? I think with breitling, it'll end up going down to the usual suspects again and I'm fairly certain the Navi 01 will end up winning.

As I mentioned, it's no point having a greatest watch contest as the Sub will likely end up winning.

I should probably read all the posts before replying.

I have a humble suggestion, why not do it the American Idol way? Each will vote 5 of what he thinks the best, then consolidate all the nominees and flash out all the names. From there every week there will be an elimination round, so all will vote which to eliminate. During the week before every elimination round, there can be a thread where everyone can comment freely and try pull votes for their own favorite watches, why their favorite watch should stay and emerge as the greatest Breitling, and so on... To speed things up, during the final 20 and above, eliminate like 3 to 5 pieces every week, from the final 10, eliminate 2 every week and the final 5, eliminate 1 every week. And hey, during the final 10, there can be 1 revival round to vote for an eliminated piece to qualify back for the contest! Not sure if it can be done but just my thoughts;)

I'm hoping that this yr the Navi 01, having been given top dog position last yr, will be willing to step aside and let another great Breitling come through :-)

That's like saying there's no point in having a Breitling contest because the Navi 01 will win.

Apart from being hugely complicated and requiring repeated votes for the same watch every week it would be impossible to construct on the site with the restrictions of the polling. Threads trying to promote one watch over another would also become moderation nightmares as feelings got heated.

Ya you are right, seems like the result is pretty much anticipated. But still nice for the fun of it. Can have the greatest watch contest too provided if you are able to handle it since there are so many many brands out there, let alone the many models available within every brand.

Thoughts--I suspect the 01 would do very well again, though I do sense a little change in the demographic-- lot of SA wearers are active at the moment. I don't remember if this was part of the discussion, or whether it would simply be too complicated, but how about doing a divisional contest, Navitimer series, Aeromarine, Professional, et. al. Looking at the BS index there would need to be a little consolidation, and I don't know how you would want to treat Special or Limited Editions. Also, maybe a vintage contest, maybe the cutoff at '78 or '79, when the Breitling family shut it down. You could have champions more specific to a style or genre. If you wanted to have a final champions round you could, but I don't think its necessary for the Tournament to be the same each year.

and then pitch the group winners against each other - not a bad idea at all.
though we probably know the vintage winner too already, the ref. 896.

The people really versed in vintage, like you, Dracha, Newbie et. al. ( apologize for any obvious omissions) might even be able to set up some divisions in vintage for a couple of interesting "horse races" perhaps.

The overall thought is to give the the various corners of the broad Breitling spectrum some attention and maybe have some fun competitions, exposure to models that most here don't think about as much. The various special editions could make it interesting, too.

Whatever you guys come up with is fine with me, I'll do my forum duty and vote - :)

Maybe we could throw out the Navi. 01 this year, you know, put it in the Hall of Fame, ineligible for a couple (?) years. I'm sure it has broken some NCAA rules somewhere  . Come up with a new winner this year.

Right! It went from 41.5 to 43mm over night. Invoke the PED clause.
