This looks increasingly like a 1-horse race with the one and only red/black design. I tried on a black SOHC / OC for the first time and it simply affirmed that all-black is the only option for me.

My thoughts on an LE would be to have a display back and engraved numbers xx/xx but stick to black. Definitely count me out of the current proposal - garish colour smacks of bling - not what this model deserves.

Still, wish the best of luck with it.

Ike

I haven't checked that e-mail account since last night - I don't have access from my client's site, but as of then there is only one person who has said that they are definitely in publicly in this thread that I didn't have a form from - and they know who they are.

The reason I don't post more details is very simple - we don't know what they are yet!

Driver8 and Admin will have my draft profile for review in the next day or so and when complete we'll get that to Breitling for approval.

If and when that happens we can start talking model specifics, production run sizes, price and process.

Anything else is speculation which will lead to a lot of posts in this thread and comments along the lines of "we need a new thread, no one is going to read x pages of this".

If we put all the info in the very first post, and i mean ALL the info, then no one has to read through any amount of threads to find the info for this Limited Edition proposal.

Since Aleister started this one I guess he would have to be the guy to do it..

Guys I hope you don't mind, but I felt I should throw my 2-cents in here since I am in the middle of the SE process right now...

First of all, let me say I love the idea and the mock-ups...wish I could participate, but with one SE on the way, I really cannot afford it right now...wish I could though...it will be superb when it is a reality and on your wrist.

Roff is very much right on many of the things he has stated in this post and in the original post...expectation management and a whole lot of patience are going to be the keys here.

This is the reality that brought us to where we are today with our LE buy:

1. Original idea was proposed about a year ago. There is a similar SE Aerospace that another US Navy Command has and that sparked the idea for us.

2. After about two to three months "discussing" the dial logo design and the engraved caseback options, a final decision was made with relatively few dissenters...but this was after many, many emails and discussion. Then it took another few weeks for Breitling to agree and approve the design. They were very much involved from the start and gave us many limitations on logo size and location, but it took additional time to make sure everything would work the way we wanted. I believe most of this time was spent also making sure they could craft the dial logo and engrave each individual caseback with individual wording and yet another one of two logo choices without changing their production processes drastically.

3. Minimum buy was 25 for us from the start. Interesting how many of those that seemed very interested in the early discussions began to drop off as they learned of the actual cost and the lengthy wait time.

4. We ended up getting 38 "confirmations," so that was great. But the challenge was not over yet. Breitling requires that all the funds be paid by a single source. Thought this was going to be easy at first, but getting everyone to put their money in during a certain amount of time was tough. And we had two added advantages that made this a little easier...we were all in the U.S., and we had one guy that we all knew personally that was willing to be the organizer and collector.

5. It took about a month for a bank account to be set up and everyone's funds to transfer and be recorded successfully. Our organizer then paid Brietling and the work began.

6. Original estimate for completion time was 6-8 months and we are now experiencing a slight delay. This is a bummer as I posted separately, but we are all more than willing to wait for the final product to be produced correctly the first time...we all know Breitling quality and respect their timeline. However, it will now be closer to 9 months from date of order to shipping if we don't slip again.

7. Shipping will be from Breitling to each individual...one challenge here is that some of us do not currently live in the U.S., so the shipping rates are much higher...my watch for example, will ship to the U.S., then back to me in Germany. This significantly increased the cost...it is running about $25 to ship to the U.S. and $50 to get the watch to me here in Germany.

I don't mean to upset the apple cart here by any means...but I really agree with Roff that folks need to understand what they are getting into up front...not just a money investment, but a real investment in time and patience.

Like I said at the beginning, it will be worth it and I wish I had the funds to be part of it...I wish you all the best of luck, and please don't let me discourage anyone...just thought you ought to know the reality of something like this up front. As my Mother always used to say, "Good things come to those who wait," and IMHO, this will definitely be worth all the work and time!

Randy

Can't Roff add to that post as a moderator?

I have emailed the form a week or two ago, but as it stands right now its looking like I may have some rather large financial commitments coming up aka buying a house :)

When are you expecting to need absolute confirmation? (I dont want to give any false expectations if me joining the LE buy is no longer feasible)

Thanks

Andrew

He can, but its not a good habit to get into editing people's posts regularly as its not the "right" way to go about things. It can create a habit of editing people's posts just for fun. It should only be done when there is a violation of rules or to remove certain unsavory elements.

Am I to understand that you had to pay Breitling in full and in advance to get your LE's made?

Is that because you went directly to Breitling? Would we have to do that if we went through a AD?

I might be interested in a limited edition run....all depends on the final look of the product and what everyone on the forums agree upon.

So here's a quick update.

I can't tell you on timing, because there are still too many hurdles to jump - I'm guessing that you are going to need to be prepared to spend money around Christmas.

I have a max of 15 commitments (although of course no one is actually committed at this stage), but not all for the more popular red / black SOHC.

Additionally, I personally feel that some people have unrealistic expectations of cost, but that's speculation right now.

I am aware that Breitling has a policy of demanding all funds up front based on their list price for the custom model. I'm looking at some options on that, but no guarantees and I can't have serious discussions until Breitling formally agree to accept a commission from us.

I have drafted a profile of the BreitlingSource community and it is with Driver8 and Admin for review / editing.

I'm thinking it's going to be the mock-up posted in this thread. The majority seam to like it so it should get the 25+ without too much trouble :)

I want to like this watch so badly, but I'm just not getting very excited about it. :? The possibility of it being a Breitling Source LE is very exciting and I would like to be part of it, but not enough to force me into liking a watch I guess. Different strokes for different folks? I hope this ultimately works out for everyone.

Broncosport,
Yes, for our deal Breitling wanted all funds up front before even starting the order. You are correct that we were working directly through Breitling, so I don't know what an AD would do.
