The SO Steelfish is destroying the Navi 806 . . . this is an atrocity. What's wrong with you people?

Dissenting voice here, and you hard core types feel free to flame away. :nana:

Yeah, I get the historic significance of the 806 blah, blah, blah . . . but first doesn't mean best and other Navi models with more contemporary relevance will advance to the next round, and to the championship no doubt.

So I used my vote to honor a truly great dive watch that died far too young.

I say, let the 'Fish swim.

Is it?

Driver, I'm assuming that you're inferring I used the word "atrocity" inappropriately. If this is the case, I don't entirely agree. It is slightly out of place in this context, as it's usually reserved for crimes against humanity, but not outright incorrect IMO.

 No, I wasn't referring to the use of the word atrocity. It's a perfectly valid word to use...... if of course you agree with it being bad that the SF is outperforming the 806 in this poll. I actually personally voted for the SF in this particular round over the 806 for reasons along the lines of Sooner's post! :D

I'm not surprised. The vintage pieces were always going to struggle, even iconic pieces like the 806. Breitling has done nothing to preserve or promote its heritage and so the models are simply dated anachronisms for the modern Breitling enthusiast.

Well, strictly speaking it sold most of its heritage to Sinn at one point... Or so the tale goes. It is really true though, what is, mercifully, treasured, is the Navi's looks. What isnt though, is the Navi itself... Its as if there was only the 9300 Speedmaster (brilliant watch that is) and no ref 3570.50

Edit: I'm really bad at typing these days...

Point well taken, Roff. However, given that the clientele on this website is usually different than the typical Breitling customer, I thought the 806 would carry more weight. I guess I was very wrong. I'm just disappointed to see such a classic piece get defeated by a more run of the mill (in my opinion) Breitling piece.

By the way, in case it wasn't clear to Driver and Sooner, I was kidding. You guys are only moderately dead to me :D

How do you think I felt when my Co-Pilot fell out of the first round... :(

Once again...wow! I am in the minority for my fair share. A couple of the current leaders are shocking to me....oh well. It must be generational!

I took it as a personal threat.

Back to the 806, I respect the role it played in the history of the brand. But "greatest Breitling?" I can't go there. And since a Navi will most likely win this competition anyway, I wanted the very deserving 'Fish to have a moment of glory.

down on 3 and tied on 1. Not too bad since I picked the Skyracer over the TOC just because I can't warm to that watch, in house or not. So I knew I'd go down there. But the BB losing to a very limited edition Cossie? I know that model is highly sought after and hard to come by, but the BB Big Date most recent version losing? Aww, come on, it can't be.

Totally agreed with you on the Skyracer and the BB.

I know of no recent Breitling that has been as popular and engendered such cultish loyalty among its owners as the Steelfish. It deserves a place of honor. Both my main ADs were devastated when it was pulled. There have been plenty of Navis and all are deserving of the admiration they have. Likely one of them will win. The Fish occupies a special place, though, especially because its demise embodies the angst and frustration of many Breitling lovers to the new questionable designs. And nothing has replaced it - NO, I do not count the SO44 as a replacement to the Fish. Whereas the Navis have many iterations and still today the essential gene pool has survived. The Fish was a currently popular watch sacrificed in the name of radical change.

Go Steelfish. :lingsrock:

An eloquent eulogy. :boohoo:
