What's all he commotion? Don't most toys come in cardboard boxes?

At least Breitlings don't have 15 twist-ties holding it in the cardboard box.

I'll admit that at first I was a defender of the new Breitling boxes. However, since experiencing boxes from Zenith and IWC, I have to admit that the Breitling box doesn't measure up. It is well made for what it is but what it is is substandard for watches in this price range.

:yeahthat

As much as I'm sorry to see the bakelite go (my wife has a new galactic 30 on the way :( ), I have always been frustrated that there has been no practical reason to revisit the box aside from the initial unpackaging. Is there anything I've missed here as i would love to have a practical reason to actually use it!

They continue to gouge us with the prices, yet they present us with an inferior package. I really dont care much for boxes either, but the whole charge more/deliver less philosophy stinks.

I found it was handy for storing my watch on those nights when I didn't feel like putting it on the winder. But otherwise, I rarely used it. Most of the time, it stayed inside the cardboard box, in the closet. That's why, when I saw that Breitling ditched it, I wasn't too bothered. It always struck me as a bit wasteful. However, I also agree that cheapening the packaging while increasing prices is a lousy move. And it's also a fair point that other brands at this level have superior packaging. If Breitling is intent on playing with the big boys, I don't think this is the way to do it.

However, when it comes time to sell your watch, the presentation does matter, as most everyone wants to buy a preowned watch with box and papers.

Most people want original boxes and papers as a sign of authenticity. As long as buyers know this new setup is what the watch originally came with, I don't think it will affect resale from that standpoint. However, insofar as the older boxes might become collectibles in and of themselves, the presence of absence of the box could make a difference in the resale value of a watch.

I admit I haven't seen the new packaging in person, and I'm in no mood to defend Breitling on any issue at the moment, but with that said, maybe this change isn't such a big deal. Rolex, after all, has some of the cheesiest packaging in the industry (looks a lot like Invicta!) and it doesn't seem to have impacted either their brand image or their resale value.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if we didn't see other leading brands down-scale their packaging in the years ahead. Squeezing out every penny of profit is the way of the world these days, and packaging is an obvious target. Perhaps Breitling is just ahead of the curve.

BTW, if anyone has a pic of the new packaging larger than the one posted by the OP, I'd appreciate seeing it.

I haven't seen the new box in person, and I won't experience it since I won't buy a new Breitling given the current styles. IMHO the new packaging makes a horrible first impression on the luxury watch buyer. These guys need to get their heads out of their asses and start listening to their owners. Sadly, ego has brought about the demise of many companies. I wish them the best and hope the come to their senses soon.

People would still buy Rolex even if the box exploded in their face.

Just received the new packaging, with a new watch inside and....all I can say is that it's really sturdy cardboard. As far as cardboard goes they didn't go for the cheap stuff. :?

Congrats on the new watch, TL! Anything you want to share? :D

But saying at least the cardboard is sturdy is like saying, "I fell out of my 5th floor bedroom window today, but at least there wasn't a massive spike at the bottom!"

There have been a few threads on the boxes and every one takes off like this with people piling on. I can't think of any other change that Breitling has made since BreitlingSource has been around that has had such a consensus opinion. Many of the recent changes have been disliked, but they have all had a minority of supporters, but in this case no one seems happy.

If that doesn't send a message to BReitling then nothing will.

yeah, im like most people. once i get it home, the box papers etc. goes in storage and never looked at again. BUT, its the point that pisses me off. not only are they hiking prices up. they are cheapening a part of their overall product...

So even the "LE's" and other limited / Specials come in this crap? Like a 6.75 arrives in a Gi-Joe box?

Eventually, Breitling may offer only a la carte purchases.
