Thank you for all the replies. It is a decision I want to take my time over. When I went to an AD recently he showed me the Galactic and it did fit nicely on my wrist. He kept talking about a new movement for the piece.

Thank you.

I was standing at the Breitling counters Saturday waiting fort watch to be sized and some dude strolls up and asks some sales dude about the M2000 or whatever that quartz monstrosity is called. The sales duded says "and of course this is all in house made." It was everything I had to keep quiet.

My choice for a first Breitling would be in the Chronomat line. My feeling is they are a little more durable and I find the pilot bracelet to be more comfortable than the navi bracelet which is a little sharper on the edges, in my opinion. Be sure to go in and try them on before buying.

Good luck with the search.

I had a salesperson at an Omega AD also try to tell me the Aqua Terra chrono was in-house, as well. Her reasoning was interesting: in the Omega catalog, there are asterisks next to caliber numbers denoting they are ETA based. The caliber 3313, used in the ATC, had no such asterisk, meaning it wasn't ETA based. As such, she reasoned, it was in-house. What she failed to realize is that the 3313 is Piguet based, meaning it is neither ETA nor in-house.

The moral of the story: sometimes ADs just don't know what they're talking about; always take what they tell you with a grain (or five) of salt.

[snip] To be honest a lot of what he was saying did go over my head. Didn't help that I had someone with me with a Breitling so they were 'talking shop' for quite a while.

Breitling did introduce a new, in-house movement in 2009. It first appeared in the Chronomat B01 (now called the Chronomat 44), which was the direct successor to the Chronomat Evolution, which as I said was retooled into the Galactic Chrono II. So, in that sense the Chronomat line in general did get a new movement, even though the Evolution/GCII did not. It's possible the AD was referencing that in some capacity, and you didn't fully understand the context. Ultimately all we can do is speculate.

I think you're smart to take your time. Some people are fine buying watches in blissful ignorance, but if you're the kind who likes to know about what he's getting, then there's a lot to learn before plunging into such an expensive purchase. You might also be surprised how much your preferences change as you continue to find out more about these watches.

I've already swayed dramatically from the Galactic to the Montbrillant. And that's in the space of a month. I think I will keep looking, try a few more on and of course keep reading this site to build up my knowledge. Hopefully then I can make a better, informed decision.

Where would be a good place to start reading, and about what first? There seems so much to take in, but I just don't know where to begin.

Look at the models section, look at the gallery and decide which models truly resonate (as opposed to resonate for a week or so) and then search for thsoe models, likelihood is that there will be many, many threads on that model. Also, go to an AD and try some on - the way that you feel with one on your wrist is likely to be very different than just looking at pictures.

Of course, just post pictures of the watch in the replica section first, make sure that you get the full story from hte seller and of course, buy the seller first.

Problem with this listing is that it's a stock photo, although a seller with good reputation.

Seller claims the photos are of the actual watch. I believe that. A number of these well-established, pre-owned dealers have the facilities to take high-quality pictures of the watches they sell. (You'll see the pic is just one of many shown in the listing.)

Didn't see the others - just the white background 10:09 that screams 'stock', but you are probably right.

I managed to try one of these on today, or at least it was a 'limited edition'. It seemed really small on my wrist though, much smaller than in the pictures where others had worn one. The second hand was red and it didn't have the date on the top of the face.

Cannot find any information on this online though, which is strange..

It sounds like you were trying on a Montbrillant 01 LE, not a Montbrillant Datora. The 01 LE is a limited edition, in-house model with a 40mm case. (It is also available in a non-LE version.) In contrast, the Datora has a 43mm case, so you can see why the 01 may have seemed smaller to you. 40mm is in that zone some people consider "normal," and other people consider small. That said, it's larger than the previous Montbrillant, which was 38mm. It all boils down to personal preference, what you're used to, and wrist size. For more information, go to the Breitling website - it's on there.

That sounds right to me. It was the Montbrillant 01 I tried, not even the limited edition (although it was advertised as that). I was told it was a 43mm Datora LE. I'm getting worried about where to look now...

Thanks again for the help. I know it must be a pain keep asking questions. I will do my best to find a Datora to try on, I'm sure it will feel much better than the 01 as it just seemed too small.

I'm glad I waited. Decided on the Navitimer World :)
