Well the cynic in me would say that it's because they know that it would cost too much to warrant the earlier pieces for 5 years.

:yeahthat Plus, as I pointed out in the other thread, the earliest 01 watches are already out of warranty. If owners have had to finance their own repairs, and then Breitling reinstates their warranties, are the owners entitled to be compensated for those expenses? Performing repairs for "free" is one thing; reimbursing cash is quite another. That gets very messy. It would also be messy if Breitling were to extend warranty coverage only to those watches with warranties still in effect - in other words, to any in-house watch bought after April 2010. That would still seem quite arbitrary, and would seem to deliberately screw only early adopters. No doubt they would get a lot of complaints, and it might even generate legal action. January 2012 is a nice, clean point for retroactive coverage.

The way the announcement reads, "by offering an exceptional five-year warranty on all models equipped with these calibers." they are creating false expectations followed by disappointments and unhappy customers.

While I agree it sucks for customers who bought before January, the fact is, when they bought, they were informed that their warranties would be two years in duration, and they willingly made the purchase with that knowledge. They had no false expectations about five-year warranties because, back then, there were no ads or announcements about five-year warranties.

That's a valid and reasonable point. I feel badly for the guys whose warranties aren't being extended but Breitling are in a tough situation with this rollout.

It just occurred to me that Breitling is one-upping Omega by going with a five-year warranty (as opposed to Omega's four-year). It reminds me of a funny article in The Onion about the razor "blade wars." It's laced with impolite language (and that's putting it mildly), but I never cease to get a chuckle reading it. What's remarkable is it was intended to be a spoof, but ended up being prophetic, since it came out two years before Gillette introduced the five-blade Fusion.

You took the words out of my mouth. While it would be very nice if they would honor the 5 year warranty even on older 01 pieces, it doesnt change the fact that the watch was willingly purchased with a 2 year warranty. If I buy a car today, and find out that next years models has a longer warranty, I wouldnt expect mine to carry the new terms. It would be nice though :cheer:

I have no issue with Jan 1 2012 or even 2015. What I find strange is the way they communicate it or the lack of it.
