There's a lot of topics regarding the SQ versus mechanical-debate. Maybe the mods can make one sticky?

Personally I much prefer mechanical movements over quartz, to me a quartz watch is little more than one of the functions you get from a cell phone and I can't fathom paying preimum prices for one. SuperQuartz is good technology, but personally the whole thermo compenasted quartz seems to solve a problem that doesn't exist - it's not like a $10 Chinese quartz watch is particularly inaccurate.

And on top of that, if I'm not wrong, you'll eventually come to a point where Breitling won't be able to repair the mechanism any more, hence having to replace it. Something that happens very rarely with a mechanical watch.

One thing I was wondering: do four super quarts make a super gallon?

I believe its a matter of preference. A mechanical movement is more interesting to look at but in terms of accuracy and durability, a superquartz movement can't be beat. I'd also wager that the B73 SQ movement powering the seawolf chrono more than likely costs more than a mechanical B13 7750 based movement. You will also find people making reference to old miyota powered quartz Breitling and the lack of parts availablity. This is no longer a concern as Breitling has vowed to support its SQ models for 20 years after production of the movement has ceased and given the fact that quartz technology will more than likely remain at the current level, the current range of movements will continue to be manfactured for many many years. Also, these SQ movements are no different mechanically than their balance sprung counterparts aside from the electronics and stepper motors that do the work of a balance spring. They can be stripped down and cleaned/serviced just like a mechanical and the fact that the electronics are housed in a sealed watch case, i wouldnt be surprised if they last 50 plus years with less than half the amount of service a mechanical would have required in that time span. Heck, there are 40 year old Omega Marine chronometers still ticking away and the electronics in those pieces are no where near as well built as todays.

One must also keep in mind that these thermocompensated SQ movements are the pinnacle of standalone timekeeping.

I am partial to mechanicals but there is always room for a SQ in ones collection.

My two cents...

Good timekeeping in a mechanical watch is valuable to me; it has taken precision work and dedication to detail. Quartz is inherently accurate and therefore a cheaper watch would suffice. I have a TAG quartz, was happy when I bought it as it was my first "name" watch. But even as i bought it, i had decided that the next watch will be a mechanical due to the above mentioned reason. 7 years later (and just two days ago) my wife presented me with a Super Ocean Heritage Chronograph with the blue bezel and dial. I made the right decision 20 years ago when I married her :)

You guys talk about quartz watches like you're gonna keep it for the next 15+ years. I don't think I'll ever keep a watch for more than 5-6 years (except my late fathers Datejust), so the finite life of a quartz movt is not an issue with me. In fact, I tend to change my collection every 2-3 years.
I like quartz because its versatile, needs next to no setting, and as mentioned, sometimes you do need an alarm & backlight.....what if your cellphone was dead?
OK, when camping etc., I might use my G-Shock but more often than not, i prefer to use a 'nice' watch whenever i can. The Aerospace fills that gap.

I definitely prefer mechanical, there's something about a mechanical watch that feels kinda alive, I don't know. If I were only to have one watch it would be a mechanical one but I would love to have a B-1 or a Seawolf Chrono at some time in the future.

For some reason I now just can't bring myself to buy a quartz watch, no matter what it is or how it looks. There is absolutely nothing wrong with quartz, I wore quartz watches for many years but for now it's mechanical all the way. That's just how it is for me.
