The depth has to do with bar pressure which any diver would understand.
This means atmospheric pressure at sea level, plus additional water pressure at depth.

It is complicated, I am not a complicated person, so probably won't explain well.

If you read the specs, ATM = 1 bar. Even though the depth shows greater, that bar is immersed with no movement. Movement of wrist increases the pressure on watch greater than depth does.

I believe that all watches, exceed those printed limits, but to cover their butts and be 100% sure, just as in certification, they will show the least amount possible.

Therefore, I have a cheap waterproof quartz I dive with. If it falls off or salt eventually eats the gaskets (which it will do if not properlly rinsed), I don't care. I don't care how good I look to fellow divers who are looking at the beauty of nature for 30 minutes, I would rather protect my investment.

Swimming pools - chlorine, is also not good on watches. So all Breitlings should be fine for reasonable water usage regardless of what they say, it depends on how you take care of them.

Thanks guys for your thoughts and keep them coming please......
On my wish list next is the Breitling emergency, I love the look and everything about it. I'm going to wear mine when I get it any place within reason I want. I won't go diving in it, but snokeling, jet skiing, tubing and any other surface or close to the surface of water sports I want to do. I agree with you gents that say Breitling is built better then what they even want to say. To me that means to heck with it I'm going to live life as I want to with only a Breitling on my wrist.
Who is with me men......

I would hope you would be able to swim, jetski, etc... in a Emergency type watch, because they are built to be rugged. A Navitimer or Datora on other hand is a bit dressier and of course would not subject the watch to any of those activities.

I hope you get an Emergency, and post pics if you do, I love those watches. :D

A moderator on another Breitling forum, once mentioned that while his AD was on a tour of the Breitling factory, he witnessed a water pressure test of a SeaWolf. It was taken to a pressure equivalent to 10,000M, the watch itself is rated to 3000M. What happened you ask? Not much, it kept working, crystal stayed intact and did not leak. The lugs slighlty bucked from the extreeme pressure. This should give you an idea as to how over-engineered Breitling's truly are.

Anybody think that perhaps it is possible that the E and the E Mission are capable of the same water capabilities, but B gave them different ratings just to differentiate the two more?

What Breitling-nutt said is true. Usually big names will make their watches undergo extreme tests to ensure the high quality, and to be on the safe side they will indicate a lower rating not to risk any mishaps with the brand.

However, we have to be clear about the simple rules of the game, it is more expensive to build a watch that will be able to withstand a 10,000 m pressure than to build a watch prepared let us say for a 300 m.

So while what you have mentioned is so very true that marketing people in any company will do their best to have diversification in their product offering, we do no expect them to ask their R&D and manufacturing to invest the same costly materials required for deep-sea watch in every other watch line! That would not be cost-effective nor profitable.

Having said that, this is not to suggest, even remotely, that the Breitling Emergency is poorly built! On the contrary, it is excellently built for what it is made for.
