I'm with most of you who said there's probably a finite/optimum number that I'd be happy with in order to a) wear them all an appropriate amount, and b) appreciate them nough without being "degraded" by constant new additions.

I think my optimum number would be around 10. I think this probably goes back to the thread that asked, "Are you an enthusiast or a collector". To me, and while I fully appreciate they are not mutually exclusive states, I think a collector will carry on buying more and more, even if some of them will never see any wrist time as a result of being in such a large collection, whereas an enthusiast will (probably) want to be able to appreciate each piece more in it's own right, so may have a smaller collection, even if their financial position would allow them to own a vast collection if they so desired.

Obviously I am generalising somewhat here (some may say stereotyping!) as there's no doubt there is overlap between the two in some cases : for example, I'd put Roff in the collector AND enthusiast camp.

Personally I currently have 6 watches, but if I'm honest, none of them would make my "long-term keeper" list! I still have plans to create that collection, but it's kind of on hold at the moment.

I'm with Diver & Sharkie, I think 10-12 will be the magic number for me. Currently with 7, I feel the pressure of giving each equal & fair wrist time in a week -- and that's just too stressful! With 10-12, I'd be able to forget the math & just enjoy whichever piece happened to be on my wrist :D

I have seven "good" watches, a perfect old vintage Accutron, a couple I would sell but they're not worth much, and an old Seiko my wife bought me for Christmas when we were first married and every dollar mattered. I stop and think about which one to wear for more than a moment on several mornings. The two-tones tend to give me the most pause--do I really need to wear this much watch to work today? But then, why have them? Most everybody at the office now knows I'm a "watch guy", so it shouldn't be as big an issue, but I still think about it. And yes, I feel pressure to wear a watch if I haven't worn it in ten days or so. I can't explain why. I do choose a watch sometimes because I haven't worn it in a couple of weeks. I seldom wear the same watch on consecutive days.
Most days, I check the attire and choose a watch. My blue face and champagne face watches are more limited, at least for me, and my pearl face (one of the two-tones), though I love it, probably causes me to wear it less because it is dressy. For all the fretting, however, it's worth going through because its a pleasure and a privilege to have the watches I have, and I hope never to lose sight of that.

Thanks to all who posted. I have now worn my newest purchase (Avenger Seawolf SS in yellow) for the past three days since I acquired it on Saturday (see attached pic). The SuperOcean Heritage (although buying it a few weeks ago) remains in the winder for now. I guess once the "newness" of the Seawolf wears off I will go back to wearing all my watches in a regular rotation. I think the Seawolf will remain my weekend watch especially once the black Ocean Racer strap arrives later in the week. The sad part I guess is that a newly acquired watch kind of pushes all the other washes to the winder for a while. Does this happen with anyone else?

Maybe I should start my own style of wearing a watch on both wrists!!!! Think I could get this to catch on??? :D

I would agree with this. I feel like I have enough time pieces at the moment. My BlackBird can be worn with a suit or a t-shirt and has a chrono...I like to wear my Omega on vacations and to the beach/ocean/snorkeling, and my PAM is generally brought out on dates with the wife on the weekends or special "dress" scenarios. I'm in the market for a vintage piece strictly for special dress up situations and would love a Patek - all 3 of my watches are relatively bulky and somewhat tough with cufflinks - so a thinner vintage timepiece for dressy situations would be a nice touch.

However, I will concede that when I get a new watch, I look for excuses to wear it....I'll actually wear it to bed if I don't have an "everyday" situation to wear it in....cheeky....childish....? I dunno...but as I get older, very few things "geek" me out as much as a new watch

I think it's completely normal. You have a new watch with all the fun and novelty of acquiring it. Don't feel the least bit bad if it dominates your wrist for a couple of weeks. By then I suspect the euphoria will have calmed down a little and you mix in your other watches. Give it time, though if one keeps getting left, out, it might be transaction time.

I have always thought vintage might be the way to go for a high dress timepiece. Im not talking your dressy work watch but more your tuxedo watch. A nice simple vintage gold would check quite a few boxes for me.
