Trouble with writing a documentary type book is you get the authors opinion on what's right or wrong. There will be a few points always open for debate. We've got that with Richter already. Now if it was laid out more like a reference guide, maybe supported by or sponsored by Breitlingsource, it would have less of a tendency to involve the authors opinions. Like Jack Webb would say on Dragnet, "just the facts." Lulu works great for limited publication and production can be increased based upon demand.

I agree Paul.

I wrote my comments here more than 2 years ago, and since then the amount of writing that I do has increased dramatically. I have monthly commitments to different people that add up to about 100,000 words a year and another 50,000 or so in one off white papers / commissions - none of which is watch related, and all of which sucks up a lot of time and energy - it doesn't leave much time for anything else.

I have bounced this around a little bit in the last couple of years and got to the point where I don't want to write opinions and interpretations - there's just way too much opportunity for mistakes to be made and that's more damaging than offering nothing. Of course whatever was produced would also be criticised by some on principle, but we can consider the source there

The idea of something from this group supplemented by people like Lester Harrison has some appeal, but the challenge with the Dragnet approach is that there is such an absence of facts that we either fall back on supposition and hypotheses or we have an incomplete record.

Look for a couple of upgrades soon in the vintage section of the site that may have the potential to become a foundation for something like this down the road.

:yeahthat

The wonderful thing about this site is that it lets differing opinions coexist as long as they are not proven wrong, respectfully working together to expand the knowledge base.

This might be too much of a talmudic approach for some who want clearcut answers and want them immediately - but there are just not enough reliable records in most cases, so we go along and try to cooperate in building the most reliable resource possible - this will take time and a lot of effort from as many members as possible, happy to be a part of this community and learn from you all.

And yes, it would be great if Breitling themselves would try to assist, but that is probably too much to hope for.

It's the best available for pre bankruptcy. It's almost 25 years old now (the updates are only for revised pricing), and has a lot of gaps and a few errors, but there's nothing else better in terms of published books. Obviously original catalogues, advertising, etc is as good as it gets.

It also has a frankenwatch in it, or at least a watch that has been serviced / restored inconsistently with how it should look.

Hi Roff, a query, any idea if Benno Richter is still living today and how old? (And yes is spooky, but I googled up for that first but nothing turned up;)). Surprising he didn't publish a sequel to the book if he still is or entrust it's sequel to someone knowledgeable if he isn't. Anyone here ever met the author or ever saw him? Waiting for my book to arrive!
Found a picture of him here

As I said in this thread before, I have no idea if he is still alive.

Btw did find a record for a Benno Richter but might not be him since says passed away in 1964 but was mentioned in one of the threads here that the book was last updated 25 years ago, any idea which year the last real update to the book was made considering the current reruns were mentioned as having no content updates in them?

Pretty sure that a book documenting the 1970s / 80s era of Breitling wasn't written by a man who died in 1964. The book has never been updated by the author to the best of my knowledge, the 3 editions are just pricing updates.
