There were some studies done (by one of the companies that produces 'golf watches') that showed that the g-forces were something ridiculous on a drive - can't remember the accurate numbers but it was something like 100G at the club head or some such ludicrous number.
The forces are definitely enough to damage the watch, although in most circumstances the direction of the force will cause it to be distributed around the movement by the case design (which is designed to be shock resistant).
Bottom line is that the vast majority of golf shots will cause no damage at all, but the risk is always there.
