I think all one really needs from non-collectors perspective, is a watch that is appropriate for anything. In other words, everyday beater (whatever you want), "work" watch (like a G-Shock), dress watch (scaled back and slimmer), and I think it's in good taste to deploy a lower-profile piece that's of quality if appropriate.
