Hello! I am getting my first Breitling, and am trying to decide between the Colt Automatic or the basic SuperOcean. I have a few questions.

1) What is the list price on each? What is a reasonable counteroffer to make to a dealer?

2) How big is the difference in "prestige" between the two? Is it worth paying a few extra hundred dollars just to say you have the SuperOcean?

3) Is there any difference in ruggedness between the two? I'm especially concerned about scratching.

Thanks!

Both excellent watches...

#1 Superocean is $2,845 on bracelet and the Colt Auto is $2,695... As far as what you should pay, I would say that depends on your AD and how much business you have done with them in the past. If an AD sees potential is a future watch collector and someone who gives excellent referrals the discount will be greater. The range tends to be between 10% and 20% in the US with some AD's doing more.

#2 I would say the SO is worth the extra money. Both watches have the same movement (caliber 17). The SO is a little heavier duty measuring 42.00 mm wide and 15.00 mm thick vs 41.10mm wide and 12.40mm thick for the Colt Auto. This extra heft is not because there is a different movement, but to help withstand the added depth requirements of the SO which is 5000 feet vs 1650 feet for the Colt. The SO also has the safety valve vs none for the Colt.

#3 As far as ruggedness, see #2...

Agreed. The SO is probably slightly more "iconic" in the Breitling range as well.

"Iconic" status or "prestige" are subjective considerations which will vary from person to person.

My advice - buy the one you like the look of most, and to heck with what anyone else says!

Yes, as Afrocoz says - don't buy the watch for what others will think, buy it for what you think.

And after that, I'd prefer the SO over the Colt. I like the apperance better and it is more "rugged", also the size is in the SO's favor.

Personally I'm a big fan of the SuperOcean!

I like the SO as well. Enough so that I'm considering it over a GT. I'm trying to figure out which is my smarter option for continued happiness as my anniversary is in a month.

Option 1: SO + diamond earrings or pearls

Option 2: GT + nice dinner and a coupon for a foot rub...:)

I'm stupid so I'll probably go with option 2.
