I purchased a new superocean on a cruise ship last year in June. Since then, I have discovered that these watches are very, very fragile. If you happen to bump it against a piece of coral while diving, and one of the numbers on the face comes loose and blocks the second hand from being able to move, tough luck. Your warranty has just been voided and you will have to pay out of pocket for any service to the watch. Also, just yesterday I noticed that the watch was falling behind. No problem, I loosened the crown and wound it. But now, I notice that when I physically move the watch back and forth(as if to self wind it), I hear a rattling sound. Something inside is not right. I regret paying the 1900+ for this watch when I could have gotten a decent Casio G-Shock for under 200 bucks!!

Whoa. Really. That's not good to hear. You have the newer model (Superocean II) right? With the applied numerals? Thankfully there's nothing but the emblem on my dial to come loose. I've never heard of anything like this before. I'm sorry to hear of your awful experience. That's distressing. Perhaps it was a faulty individual case?

Great info, and good to know, thanks. So I will stick to stainless steel for any future purchases as well.

Don't let that discourage you from considering a titanium watch. Titanium is lightweight, comfortable and has a look that's quite distinct from that of stainless steel. I own two (not Breitlings) and have had no problems.

This is great info as well. Considering the thousands and thousands of these watches sold we only hear of isolated cases of failure/malfunctions. I think it's safe to say it's the "shark attack syndrome".

Hi,

Great looking watch, is this the A17360 version? If it is I have the blue face version, very nice watch, I also have a seamster which is also another one of my favourites but the superocean just seems better built.:)

Nice find!

In nearly 15 years of being on watch forums here and there, I've never heard of common problems arising with Breitling crowns. Occasionally they get sticky, and are quite stiff to operate compared to some, because the WR is so high for its size and price (and the winding effort required for that movement is higher than equivalent Rolexes and Omegas).

I also prefer the older Superocean with the painted numbers to the newer kind, which are more towards the fashion side these days (even though the basic spec is the same).
