Roffensian:
I would be happy with a simply replacement. Assuming that outer slide rule is a separate element from bezel, but I doubt they have it in stock.

More importantly, they will match the scales. Logical that they will replace the outer as that's easy. But if they don't get a match that's in tolerance they will most likely replace both scales.

It's good they take this seriously. Not hard to do but time consuming. Will be a lesson for them in keeping the eye on the ball when manufacturing, but good they honour the principle of an accurate slide rule.

Yes, waiting is a pain.
Impressed by Breitling’s honourable, principle, and accuracy.
Will keep post more here......

I hope it all goes well and there is a successful outcome for you. Sometimes, in my experience at least, it’s not been as easy as replacing one ring to get a good match, so it may take some time. The last time this this happened to me, the subject watch was under warrantee and the local rep sent it back to Switzerland for repair. Not Breitling though. Having one scale replaced may not have fixed the issue anyway, so it was better to be placed back with the maker for assessment and repair. So the watch had a return trip to Switzerland to be refitted.

I think what happens is that during manufacture, each C & D slide rule scale is matched (probably on a sorting bench) and then allocated to a particular watch. I might be wrong on this score, but it would make sense. The two rings are close fitting onto each other, so if they were engraved as one and then spilt, then this would be a very arduous task indeed and require some form of advanced cutting. It is also possible they are ‘a snug fit’ into each other and then engraved as one unit, being separated afterwards. If that were the case, I would suggest the two scales should match. As some scales are definitely made as a single C or D scale (which I have evidence for from other makers), I can only assume that there is matching process after engraving. The angle of each graduation is not by chance, but is determined by Antilogs and then converted to decimal degrees. Each major number is a product of 1/36 division and each minor graduation is //360 or 1/ 720th, so they are mathematically derived and then set by a decimal degrees layout onto the scale face. It’s not rocket science or that intricate, it just needs accurate engraving.

The fact they do not sometimes matchup is beyond me. It’s like putting a movement together and not checking if it works correctly or not regulator timing to see if it meets a certain specification. You would not do it if you were making watch movements, so why do these scale errors occur is any ones guess. I think it’s because there is a lack of understanding of what the scales mean, or there is lax inspection or there is little effort on how to check them for accuracy.

In the end, the user is the one who determines if they are satisfied with the accuracy of their slide rule scales or not, which is a pity. As it should not get to this in the first place, but be picked up in the manufacturing process. It’s not as if it’s hard to see or to test for, as a check demo on the assembly line should put this issue to rest before the watch leaves Switzerland.

As you would know, most members here are concerned by their Breitling COSC accuracy, which is a good thing, but how many of them check the accuracy of their slide rules (for those who have these models) to the extent you are I do? I don’t think the accuracy worries everyone as its not the watches primary function, and perhaps Breitling know this is something not everyone will concern themselves with. Still, IMO it’s not good to see this inaccuracy occur occassionally.

Thanks for the wishes. Just dropped the watch with AD today. I’m crossing my figures for it…..
The local Breitling said they would rather send it to Switzerland due to short of the stock.
You wouldn’t believe that (in a country- no need to say the name) ADs are telling customers that mis-alignment of the slide rule is normal, and the customers just simply admit it. In that forum, people noticed the mis-alignment but all saying it normal and accept that inaccuracy, and the worst thing is they don’t even want to discuss it more, wired?
It is true that most people now don’t worry the slide rule accuracy because they don’t use it; IMO it gradually becomes a sort of decoration things on the watches, it’s a shame… Be a competitive watch maker, Breitling shouldn’t take advantage of this.

With the advent of pocket calculators, the need for such scale measuring devises has become almost redundant. Therefore, anyone who has a slide rule watch may not be experienced with using them, other than to go through the instruction book to see how easy or hard it is. Some owners would be used to them though, but not all.

I thought they would send it back to Switzerland, rather than try and match the bezel themselves. Limited stock outside the factory is probably the main reason. I have a few Breitlings all with slide rules, and in my experience the rules are fairly accurate. What I would call it ‘in specification’, at any rate. So it’s surprising they say that Breitling SR are normally inaccurate. Might be just there way of dealing with this issue when it arises. I don’t think they are right.

Breitling is pathetic!!

Sent the watch to them 2 months ago. First they said they trying to find perfect alignment dial/flange and that takes some time.
Fine, I wait….
But now they said they have to delay for another month, because they have to re-launch the production of those dials and will be only able to provide one with an alignment which compliant with their standard.

So they saying that all their watches are out of their standard?? Such irresponsible, why you still selling it you knew there is an issue? Why don’t you recall all your watches worldwide immediately?

Have spoke to local AD, they must compensate me for my lost. Asking for a steel bracelet, don’t know if they are willing,,,,,,,,,,

They won't recall their watches, because most people would probably not care about the indices being slightly off. Here's a pic of my old Navi...the markers were off a bit too, but I really don't care. I prefer to wear it than send it back to be opened up and have parts swapped out for something like that. Of course, if it bothers you, it bothers you. Hope they resolve the issue for you soon.

I agree with dlNYC, but there again, his watch is in spec. Slightly off yes, but only just. Zilong is much more inaccruate and would be a constant pain the A#*~ if it were my watch.

Let them have the time to do a re-run, as it wll be worth it in the end. A t least theya re willing to have a go, which can't be sneezed at.

Yes, I agree. Its pathetic that makers don't pay more attention to this, especiually given that some in the world (like me and Zilong) will care about this. Also given that they take so much care with everything else.

Hi Zilong,

Success.

I think it looks pretty good and overall it looks like its within spec. 3 months is a long time and a bit of a pity. But now that you have it back, enjoy the watch and really get to appreciate its cool design. Its a great watch and well worth the wait.

Enjoy.
