Hope you don't mind if I change the subject, but I found Andy's experiment in the original post interesting. Is it true that the accuracy of the watch can depend on the position you put it in when not being worn (resting on the crown, etc)? Is there a preferred position for a Navitimer or is it just trial and error? I'd like to try anything I can do to make it more accurate.

Thanks,
Dave

yes, depending on the orientation of the movement, the watch will gain slightly or lose slightly when left on its side in the crown up or down position.

The clever thing is to work out if your watch is consistantly fast or slow and remember to put it in the position where gravity will 'regulate' it for you....all a bit too anally retentive for me, I sleep in my watch anyway!

I suppose the way to negate the gravity regulation notion is to use a tourbillion mechanism, but then the cost rockets!

Under-rated/over-rated, I'm not sure.

I just think that Rolex is the obvious choice for an 'expensive watch' and why I don't really like them. It's what Louis Vuitton is to handbags and luggage. Aesthetically Rolex do zero for me. A friend of mine at Uni got a GMT Master II as a graduation present and told me his Rolex was much better than my Breitling just because "nobody has ever heard of Breitling." Hmmm  A nice guy we just really don't see eye to eye when it comes to watches. He was definitely in the 'I'd like an expensive watch and Rolex is the only make I've heard of' category.

However, a horology purist the Rolex would be preferable as they make their own movements.

I just couldn't wear a watch just because of the way it worked inside. It's like buying a really ugly car because you like the way the air conditioning functions.

Well said VillageIdiot, But from facts isn't Breitling has been around way longer then Rolex? I'm not a true expert on Breitlings as I just starting hearing about them a few years ago. But ya I'm just a bit dissapointed how my Rolex isn't up to par as they should be. Especially coming from a well reputative brand and an expensive one. Anyhow tomorrow I'm heading to my Rolex AD to have their certified watchmaker test my watch, they told me they can't open the back to regulate it since it's still under warranty but they can de magnetize it if needed and do some tests to find out what's really going on with my watch. Also last night after my Rolex died I started it up again with 40-45 full winds and wore it for a bit before going to bed then resting it with crown resting upwards this time, it gained +7 seconds in a 12 hour period...

When I decided that I WANTED a "luxury" watch (years ago) I really had it in my mind that Rolex was the only choice. I searched high and low and had decided that either a datejust or submariner was gonna be on my wrist someday. Problem... neither models really screamed at me. But it was the "status" symbol I always wanted. A sign of sucess and taste.

Then something great happened.... I discovered Breitling. From the point I saw one in the flesh... well you guys all know what happens next....

Now dont get me wrong... I do fancy getting a Rolex Sub or maybe a Milgauss, but only because I like the looks of them. Not for the "status". Frankly, people who "know" watches seem to be drawn away from Rolex. Well at least I have a little more respect and jealosy for someone I see wearing a Breitling, Panerai, Cartier, Patek..... then the hordes sporting a Rolex.

Plus the size thing is wierd. Wearing a 43+ mm watch for a month or two now, I think a 40mm Rolex would look strange.... maybe not. At least they started making solid bracelets.

Overrated... maybe, overpriced... yep.

My Evolution smokes anything in the Rolex line IMO. And my Steelfish is = to a Sub.

Scott

I personally don't think that Rolex is really overpriced, at least not all of their models. The Daytona does seem priced a bit high, but their Sub and Datejust models are priced very in-line with others manufactures I think. Breitling on the other hand is priced very good for what they offer. Their cases and bracelets are top notch and if they added a good line of in-house movements Breitling would be at the top of the game.

Performance wise, I've been more satisfied with my Rolex. I've owned it since September of 2006 and I've not had any problems with it. I've had some minor issues with my Breitling.

Aesthetically the Breitling wins hands down, with my Rolex Submariner coming in second.

Rolex is overated (I own a Sea-Dweller) simply because of the year over year price increases. It's unjustified IMO.

In terms of functionality and accuracy it is very accurate. The bracelet even though it feels flimsy, it has withstood the test of time. If it indeed was of poor quality, many Rolex owners would have already reported it.

Breitlings on the other hand, I love the dials on my Chrono Avenger. It is very easy to read and the AR cannot be beat. I don't know why Rolex does not apply it on their crystal. Mind you the GMT-IIc now has AR on the cyclops, but I'm not a fan of the cyclops which is why I got the Sea-Dweller plus its a no non-sense bullet-proof watch (so to speak).

I had two other Chrono Avengers before landing my 3rd one. I noticed that the Cal13 appears to be usually on the slow side in terms of the COSC spec. My latest one, I got it adjusted and its been accurate.

Hey guys this is very interesting and important as well. The marketing power and how it can raise the expectations and suck the money of consumers till the extent that it could be a breach for consumer rights!

For me, as a person coming from the pharmaceutical industry, no company could ever claim any benefit for its drugs until unless it goes through rigorous clinical testing to prove such claim. Moreover, absolute terms like “the best, the most, etc…” are never allowed in the marketing campaigns of prescription drugs. Finally it is very common to see head to head comparisons between similar drugs to know for real which is performing better on certain aspects.

Now I am sure many of you here are smashing their monitors for such an irrelevant post :D but here comes my point… why don’t we (high-end watches fans) challenge watch maker to make such head to head comparisons on aspects like accuracy, power reserve, etc… to prove to us consumers that their time pieces are the best for real and not only by relying on marketing power.

If anyone out there heard of a well designed and controlled comparison between different watches make I will be more than happy to see a link for that.
