Finally decided to take the plunge and buy an actual watch. I've already decided on Breitling over TAG, but not sure about the model. We're talking lower end here.

It's down to either the SuperOcean or Colt lines. I'm not looking for a chrono. What I am looking for:
-White or Silver face
-Professional and brown leather bracelets (how easy are these to change?)
-Automatic movement
-The Colt GMT with the extra hour hand would be nice because I cross time zones frequently over the course of some weeks but is much more of a "nice to have" than a necessity.

My questions:
-Other than water resistance and weight, what's the difference between the two? I'm especially curious about the SuperOcean Steelfish and the Colt GMT. It seems all of them use the Caliber 17 movement.
-What is a reasonable price for these two lines with the two bracelets I'd like? If it makes a difference, the jeweler I usually work with is not an AD, but has said he'd be happy to refer me to one that he knows when I'm ready to buy.

Thanks in advance!

hi mcflyphl.... congrats on a good decision. because whatever it will be it will be a Bling :D

Superocean does not have the version of a silver dial and it will give you up to 1500m water resistance (if this is enough for you :D ) and a diameter of 42 mm

Superocean steelfish has exactly the same version of silver dial with brown leather strap and it will suit an even more daring diving adventure all the way down to 2000m and with a more bigger presenation of 44mm

the Colt is considered as an entry level for Breitling, but mind you the complication of the GMT will add to the cost. they do have the version that you are looking for on the Colt GMT, but you will lose the very deep dive adventure as it will only offer 500m and it comes on a smaller presentation of only 40.50mm.

i hope this overview will be of help to you and let us know what will be your final decision.

and welocme to the club :D

Sounds like it'll probably come down to the Steelfish or the Colt, depending on cost and feel. I'm a pilot, not a diver, so if I ever need the 2000m diving capability I've probably got a much, much larger problem on my hands!

About how much should I expect to pay in a "reasonable" deal? Is $1750 overly optimistic? It's tough to get a read on the cost differences.

First off, if at all possible, you should definitely try them on. The Steelfish, and Colt wear very differently. The Steelfish is pretty big and chunky, and sportier than then Colt.

My personal favorite, at least in the white/silver dial is the colt GMT. It is a bit smaller, but it looks great on the bracelet and equally amazing on brown leather. It's really like having two different watches.

As for interchanging, if you buy a springbar tool (<$20 online) you can easily switch from strap to bracelet and vice-versa. Depending on how anal...err...careful you want to be about getting marks on the inside of the lugs, changing takes anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes.

As for price, I assume you're in the US. There do seem to be some regional variations, and even from AD to AD. but it seems to me that the average price is about 12-22% off retail. I have heard of people getting better deals, but there are just so many contributing factors, it's really hard to compare on just price alone.

Good luck with finding the right watch for you. The great news is, with those two choices, you really can't go wrong.

Dont forget the that the Steelfish is satin brushed, and the colt and superocean is polished. Big difference.
