I agree. Although I don't own one I've looked at the steelfish's and they certainly seem to be a great value for the money and a great everyday watch that will take everything you throw at it. I also really appreciate a watch rated for the depths the steelfish is rated for. I know I may be speaking as a ignorant consumer here but I always saw the water resistance rating as a sign of the strength of the watch. Personally I think the bare minimum water resistance of a Breitling should be 100m. I think every wrist watch should be capable of taking a hard fall into a pool or basic swimming without even the remote possibility of it taking on water. I'm not saying that I'd take a leather-banded Navitimer swimming, but I really think it should be able to safely take a dip in water without worry.

The answer to your dilemma is spelled S-T-E-E-L-F-I-S-H. An amazingly great watch with real heft and size that can be had new for well under $2500.

When I joined this site I made no bones about having first owned a replica Steelfish. A very, very good one that I showed to my AD who couldn’t tell. In fact it was the replica video review here that lead me to this site. It wasn’t until after I began “lurking” here that I learned to my chagrin what the a$$holes out there where doing on ebay, etc… I just never knew about that stuff.

After I began buying out the AD’s Breitling inventory a friend who knew the one Steelfish was a fake wanted to buy it. I contemplated just giving it to him, but in the end chose to take it out of circulation. A cement floor and a claw hammer and it was gone! I highly recommend spending $300 for one of those replicas and smashing it with a hammer. Not only great fun and rather cathartic, it quite reminded me of my college days. Don’t ask.

I would never buy a replica. Well... Maybe if I had a watch in sight that is very-very expensive, and I wouldn't be absolutely sure how it wears, or how I'd like it on my wrist... Maybe, just maybe then I'd get a replica (but only a good one), to "test-drive" the watch I'm considering. When I got the real thing, I'd of course destroy the watch, since selling a replica is illegal here.

I actually sort of already did that, not with a replica, but with a homage. I got an Invicta 8926C (Sub Date homage) to see whether I like the infamous Submariner design on me, whether I like or hate the date cyclops, whether the size (40mm) is too small for me, etc. I only wore it a few times, I drew my conclusion, and sold the Invicta for the same $$ I bought it for.

As for wearing a replica when you're afraid of damaging your watch... I don't understand that: there're so many nice sports watches in the sub-$500 range, why cannot one wear such a cheaper alternative when the watch is potentially subjected to harsh treatment? Or better yet: just wear nothing, like me for such ocassions :D

To answer the question is isn't uncommon, especially in the Hollywood circle, for people with extremely high end watches - Pateks, etc.. - to HAVE MADE replicas to wear around. But they actually commission a fake from a watchmaker. And pay out the behind by my standards.

Now that's just bizzare. If you're engaged in an activity that might damage a delicate, fancy watch, don't wear a delicate, fancy watch while engaged in that activity.

I SAID "the Hollywood circle." "Bizarre" is implied inherently. :nana:
