If you bring in any watch from another country, it passes through customs, and through customs the parcel usually goes through scanning or x ray machines.... does the process of scanning magnetise or harm the watch piece. Whats peoples experience on this.

I don't think it's any different than when I take my watch off and it goes through the machine when I go through security. I've never had a problem.

X-rays or other scanning devices that would be used through customs will not magnetize your watch. Even metal detectors, which use magnetic fields to detect the presence of field disturbances, us AC current so won't magnetize your watch.

If this were the case there would be LOTS of destroyed hard drives imported from Japan and China.

This seems to be coming up a lot. I might post up a thread explaining a bit about electromagnetism and how it relates (or doesn't) to magnetism. Any interest?

Yes, that would be an interesting read. Please post a lengthy explanation.

I have some background knowledge through too much college physics, but would also love to have some more. Sounds like you possess a great deal of detailed knowledge, learning from experts improves the lot of us!!! Just ask Roff.

My finely tuned ears might be catching a bit of sarcasm....

Well I promise I won't make it too lengthy. I'll get to work on a little something in the next couple of days. A little physics vis a vis watches.

No sarcasm here. I am not that subtle. If I thought you were being a pompous ass I would say so. I am truely interested. As I said; to learn from experts is a rare opportunity. 8)

If it's just an x-ray then yes, but the doctor may want you to take it off if your arm / wrist is being x-rayed.

I'd certainly be interested. I have some background in the area also (Uni physics) but I'm always open to learning more, especially from those who know more.

phew, got an xray last week and asked the technician/nurse? if my watch was ok. she said, yes, haven't had to worry about things like that for a long time with these machines...:)
