The Breitling Watch Source Forums

Saw the 2008 COSC numbers yesterday and as Breitling certifies all movements it tells us what their production figures were:

SQ - 56,224 (90% of all quartz certs issued)

Mechanical - 234,021 - third behind Rolex (770,000) and Omega (378,000)

Interesting figures Roff. Breitling are really in the big league in terms of production these days.

What really stands out to me though, is the size of Rolex's market share! So many non-watch people seem to just assume that Rolex is the absolute pinnacle of watchmaking, but their movements (while nicely put together and very reliable) ARE mass produced. Don't get me wrong, while I'm not the world's biggest Rolex fan, I'd love to own a Deepsea, but the public-at-large's image of a man sitting at his workbench in Switzerland handcrafting a Rolex movement is somewhat debunked when you see production numbers like that.

You have to assume that production numbers are close to sales numbers. Obviously there will be a delay in selling but I assume that factory / distributor / dealer inventory numbers remain relatively constant.

Problem with sales / total production numbers for other brands is that it is not generally advertised. The only reason we can figure Breitling's out is because we know that every watch (or at least movement) is COSC certified.
