Hello,

I'm new to the forum, so please pardon that I'm leading off with a question.... I was looking at this 769 and it's hard for me to gauge whether it's ok to buy. If anyone has any thoughts and doesn't mind sharing, I would greatly appreciate it. The ebay link is here:

my thoughts :
movement is not original , have a look at the export code and bridge marking (= non Breitling)

edit : case seems original

Kudos to the seller for being up front about it - in the listing title no less. I can't remember the last time I saw a seller own up to a replaced movement.

Agreed, a rare sign of honesty in the world of eBay vintage watches.

For the OP, there are more complete watches out there, to me the movement swap is a killer.

This will still sell for a decent price. A pretty minor procedure to replace the bridge and balance cock with Breitling or unmarked pieces. I don't really think it will affect the value much. Nice piece otherwise.

The hour and minute hands are from another watch, too. There were several options, but I think this one came with the radium-filled, baton hands.

Maybe more bothersome, the dial is script "B", block "Breitling", which I would not expect to be on a 1947 watch. Why is "WATCH CORP" added inside the caseback? The signed crown is a late addition, too.

I agree with Paul that it is sharp looking watch, but I think many of its parts have met each other just recently.

Thanks again -- your knowledge is truly impressive.

It certainly seems that I'm on a mission fraught with peril (at least for someone who, like me, does not know that much). If I wanted to get a 769, would you have any suggestions for how I could go about it?

Thanks so much to all for your help and patience....

Keep looking on eBay because that's the main market, and keep asking here before you commit dollars

Will do -- you guys have been incredibly helpful. I honestly would have tried to buy that one if you hadn't warned me.
