I've just seen the terrible news. Flt Lt Jon Egging was killed in the crash. My daughter and i met Jon at Fairford last month and he was a great bloke. My sympathies go out to his family and colleagues. This is a photo of Jon, my daughter took at RIAT

And the bad news continue for the Red Arrows.

Flight Lieutenant Sean Cunningham has died after being accidentally ejected from his plane while it was still on the tarmac during a training session at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire on Monday 8. RIP Red 5.

As a result, the RAF has grounded aircraft with the same ejector seat as that in which the Red Arrows pilot was killed like the Tornado and Tucano jets as well as the Hawks.

Yes, I saw that last night too. Very sad. The Red Arrows are having a bad time at the moment.
I haven't heard anything about why the first pilot didn't eject. I wonder if the seat was at fault in that case too.

Actually, Flt Lt Jon Egging did what most pilots try to do in such a case: save the people on the ground first, their aircraft second and then their own life. Nothing to do, I believe, with a faulty ejection seat.

I understood that he had already assured the safety of people on the ground and that he was flying straight and level (but low) shortly before he hit the ground.
I haven't heard anything about this accident since the day it happened. Has anything been found out yet?

Not to my knowledge. These things take time, maybe years, and the RAF rarely informs the general public of the results.

Maybe they'll have something before the end of the year because the Red Arrows were already grounded since August, at least for public displays. I surely hope so because otherwise their 2012 season will be greatly compromised.
