Afternoon all!
Bit of an odd post, didn't really know which section I should put it in, mods please feel free to move.
So, I was in my AD today trying on a silver face navi world ( wish I hadn't as now I'm smitten with it!) and we got on the conversation of what I did for a living, I'm a rep for marlboro cigarettes in the UK. The AD said to me that he has a great relationship with his breitling rep and sees them quite regularly. This got me thinking, does anyone know anymore about these sort of positions? Do you have to have an horological background? Is it reasonably well paid etc etc, even if I had to take a paycut I'm sure that would only be offset by the staff discounts they must get on watches :lingsrock:
So in brief, is anyone on here a rep for a luxury watch brand? Or know any more about it?
Thanks for taking the time to read this and answer if you are able.

Jim

I know my local breathing rep very well. As well and a fee higher ups and reps from other areas and brands. They all have extensive watch backgrounds and have been in the jewelry/fashion/watch industry their whole life. It is a very hard job to get and pays well but it does require extensive travel. If you can get it it's great but i don't think they hire from outside the industry.

In terms of being a rep, it is an elite position..Rolex, Breitling, Patek, Panerai, Omega. All of these and some others are where you want to be..

The salary and benefits / perks are excellent..

The job isn't all that hard either. The branding is so STRONG that product sells itself...

You basically enforce Breitlings sales policies, evaluate new dealer prospects, monitor and regulate dealer inventory levels, provide sales training, and attend events. Every so often you will have to assist a dealer in acquiring a piece for a customer either from the factory or from another dealer. You may have to facilitate or be a liason between the service department and the dealer. You may also have to assist a dealer with handling defective watches...

The rest of the job is just gladhanding and being the face of the company. The territory will be large and you will handle alot of accounts.

It would a very hard job to get because most people in the jobs don't leave and you would need experience within the industry to be considered...

Your best bet would be to parlay your current rep experience into an entry level rep job with a lower tier brand like Movado or Tag. I've seen those brands actively post open positions on job boards thoughout the world. From there, you would have to network into a more prestigious position. It can be done, but it will take some time, luck and tenacity...

Good Luck..

And becoming a rep for Tag isn't so easy anymore either... With LVMH's new transitions I've seen people that were with Tag for years get 'let go' because they didn't "cut it" anymore.

I have a an old family friend (who is actually my local rep for Breitling as well).. who left his position at Rolex as a rep because Breitlings pay was better..

Thanks for such informative replies, ESP fleetlord.
Knowing that it's not going to be an easy road only serves to fuel my fire further!

I noticed someone mentioned that reps make a good salary. Although it's unlikely someone will know this, I'm wondering what "good" actually translates to . . . $100k, $200k, $500k . . . what kind of money are we really talking about?

You have to look at these jobs as a total package..

Salary, Bonus, Company Car, Expense Account, Computer,Cell Phone...

I'd say total comp for Breitling Rep would be around $150k or so..

$130k being salary/bonus...rest being perks. Company car is probably a Mercedes or BMW..

Also keep in mind that this is a pretty cake job. Product is an easy order and a territory that is so large that it is hard to be micromanaged and held accountable for too much. Just gladhand, block and tackle and you'll be fine...Answer the phone, show up to key accounts regularly and you'll probably win an award.. :D
