I read this in another forum and everything I can find indicates they are independent. Here is what I got in a search I did.

Breitling is independently owned by the Schneider family who purchased the name from Willy Breitling in 1979. The Schneider family is paying close attention to the ideas, values and visions of Leon, Gaston and Willy Breitling.

As far as i can recall, Breitling went under in the 70s when swiss mechanicals were in decline.

Sinn and O&W had bought the rights to the models at that time, but not the company.

I don't think the Schneiders are Sinn or O&W.
The Schneiders (who did buy Breitling) are responsible for the revamp and success of Breitling up to this day.

So Breitling as a company is still independent, would that be a correct statement?

Breitling went bankrupt at the end of 1978, and like other bankruptcies, the assets were sold off to the high bidder. Sinn bought completed / partially completed watches and Ollech & Wajs bought the machinery and unassembled parts. The name was sold to Sicura (headed by Ernst Schneider) and over the years Sicura has morphed into what is Breitling today.

Breitling is an independently owned company.

:yeahthat , and just to add, as a result of the sell-off of old stock to Sinn and O&W in the '70's you can still find Sinn and O&W pieces (with the name "Aviation" on the dial) that look more than a little similar to various older model Navi's and Chronomatics...... which isn't surprising since they made almost entirely from Breitling parts!
